Marrakesh Film Festival set to honor Sean Penn, David Cronenberg, and Naïma Elmcherqui
An exceptional tribute
The Marrakech International Film Festival is preparing an extraordinary celebration, honoring the careers of Sean Penn, David Cronenberg, and the late Naïma Elmcherqui. This year’s event, set to run from November 29 to December 7, promises to be a poignant and star-studded occasion as it pays homage to these cinematic legends.
Remembering Naïma Elmcherqui: A national treasure
Naïma Elmcherqui, one of Morocco’s most beloved actors, left an indelible mark on the world of cinema and theatre. Elmcherqui passed away on October 5 in Casablanca, leaving behind a rich legacy that spans decades. She first captured public attention in the 1960s and 70s under the guidance of Moroccan theatre director Tayeb Seddiki.
Elmcherqui’s cinematic journey included standout roles in films such as Souheil Ben Barka’s Blood Wedding (1977), which was Morocco’s first submission for the Academy Awards. She also dazzled audiences in Mohamed Abderrahman Tazi’s Badis (1989), a female empowerment drama, and her final film, Mohamed Mouftakir’s The Fall of Apple Trees, for which she won the Best Actress prize at Sweden’s Malmö Arab Film Festival.
Elmcherqui’s contribution wasn’t limited to the big screen. Her performances in Moroccan TV movies and soaps greatly boosted her popularity, making her a household name. As a board member of the foundation overseeing the Marrakech fest, her influence extended beyond her performances, shaping the landscape of Moroccan culture.
The festival’s organizers released a heartfelt statement honoring her memory: “Elmcherqui was a true grande dame. Her departure leaves a void in the national cultural landscape. With this posthumous tribute, we honor the memory of an exceptional artist and deeply devoted woman who leaves behind a remarkably rich body of work.”
Sean Penn’s first visit to Marrakesh
Sean Penn, the acclaimed actor and director, known for his Oscar-winning performances in Milk and Mystic River, will be making his first appearance at the Marrakech International Film Festival. Penn has continuously pushed the boundaries of storytelling, most recently with his co-direction of the Ukraine documentary Superpower, and he will soon be seen in the anthology film War Through the Eyes of Animals. This innovative project focuses on animals enduring the Russia-Ukraine conflict, reflecting Penn’s commitment to blending art with powerful social commentary.
Speaking about the upcoming tribute, organizers expressed their excitement: ”We are honored to welcome Sean Penn to Morocco for the first time and to celebrate his remarkable contributions to cinema with this career tribute.”
David Cronenberg: A master of the macabre
Canadian director David Cronenberg, a master of body horror and psychological thrillers, will also receive a career tribute at the festival. Cronenberg’s illustrious career includes iconic films such as Videodrome, Dead Ringers, A History of Violence, eXistenZ, Cosmopolis, and Maps to the Stars. Cronenberg has cemented his status as an undisputed cult master, known for pushing the boundaries of genre filmmaking.
His recent work, The Shrouds, which premiered at Cannes, explores the emotional and psychological depths of a widower who develops technology to peer into his late wife’s grave. This film stands as a testament to Cronenberg’s ability to blend complex themes with compelling storytelling.
Reflecting on his participation, Cronenberg said, ”I’ve been hearing for years how wonderful the Marrakech International Film Festival is. The stars have finally aligned, and I am here—not just to experience the festival, but to receive this prestigious and lovely award for my half-century of work. What a delight and what an honor!”
