Celebrating courage: Honoring journalists at the IWMF Awards
The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) recently gathered an intimate crowd in Los Angeles to honor exceptional journalists who have shown tremendous courage in their reporting. The annual Courage in Journalism Awards recognized journalists who continue their work despite significant obstacles, highlighting the essential role of a free press in society.
A night of recognition
The event was co-hosted by Willow Bay, Gelila Assefa Puck, and Charmaine DeGraté, who welcomed attendees to an inspiring evening. Bay, Dean of the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, shared her gratitude for being part of the IWMF for two decades. Reflecting on the stories of the honored journalists, Bay noted how the perception of danger has shifted:
“Today, we are living at a moment where freedom of the press has never been more in jeopardy, where women journalists and non-binary journalists have never been more in danger.”
Gelila Assefa Puck and Charmaine DeGraté echoed these sentiments. DeGraté emphasized the rising threats against female journalists and the vital need for the IWMF’s mission. Puck, an advocate against corruption, praised the honorees for their relentless pursuit of truth despite the risks involved.
Honoring the brave: This year’s awardees
Among those celebrated were Lauren Chooljian and Mónica Velásquez. Chooljian, a senior reporter and producer at New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR), received recognition for her podcast, The 13th Step, which tackles the issue of sexual misconduct in the addiction treatment industry. Her dedication to audio storytelling has resonated with many, as she captures dynamic stories that audiences find compelling.
Chooljian candidly shared the challenges of her work:
“It’s exceedingly difficult work, especially when you’re taking on big topics like this, but what motivates me is that so many people are brave enough to speak with me and it’s their bravery. I think that keeps me going.”
Velásquez, an Ecuadorian journalist, was honored despite her absence, as she had to flee her country due to her investigative reporting on political corruption and organized crime. Her indomitable courage exemplifies the dangerous realities many journalists face around the world.
Diverse narratives, shared resilience
The ceremony also recognized Shin Daewe, a documentary filmmaker from Myanmar, with the Wallis Annenberg Justice for Women Journalists Award. In a tragic turn, Daewe was sentenced to life in prison in 2024, accused of funding and assisting terrorists. Her trial was held behind closed doors without legal representation, a stark reminder of the unjust conditions journalists often work under.
Gulchehra Hoja, a 2020 Courage in Journalism honoree, concluded the evening with a profound reflection on her and her people’s plight. Hoja, a Uyghur journalist working for Radio Free Asia in the U.S., spoke about the challenges she faces, including being banned from returning home:
“Compared to regular journalists in the U.S., every time we interview someone in the Uyghur community, we must ask, ‘Do you want to give your name and voice to us, to our radio? Is it going to harm your family back home?’”
This constant question underscores the grave stakes involved in reporting from marginalized communities, emphasizing the bravery required to tackle such stories.
Highlighting industry challenges
The night’s discussions reinforced the broader context surrounding journalism today. The increasing threats to freedom of the press and the specific dangers faced by women and non-binary journalists are more palpable than ever. These awards serve as a rallying cry to support journalistic endeavors that fearlessly pursue the truth.
The crucial role of support organizations
Organizations like the IWMF play a crucial role in protecting and empowering journalists worldwide. They provide much-needed resources, from legal assistance to grants for investigative projects, ensuring that vital stories continue to be told. As Puck noted, the unwavering commitment of journalists to uncovering corruption and fighting for truth is indispensable to maintaining an informed public.
Concluding thoughts
The Courage in Journalism Awards not only spotlight individual achievements but also amplify the collective struggle for press freedom. The stories and voices honored at the IWMF event remind us of the enduring power of journalism to effect change and hold power accountable.
