Howl: A cinematic collaboration between DiCaprio and Goodall
Pulsar Content joins forces with big names in Hollywood
An exciting addition to the cinematic world is on the horizon. Pulsar Content has officially boarded “Howl,” an eagerly anticipated film executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and renowned environmental activist Jane Goodall.
A unique survival story
“Howl” unfolds from the perspective of animals, centering on Harry, a recently orphaned family dog navigating the harsh winter in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. As Harry finds himself alone, he forms a surprising bond with a young wolf, the last surviving member of a pack decimated by hunters. Initially filled with fear and conflict, Harry and the wolf gradually learn to understand each other’s worlds, leading to a cooperative effort for survival against the wilderness.
Christopher Monger, known for his work on “The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill but Came Down a Mountain,” has penned this heartfelt narrative. The direction is helmed by Elias E. Merhige, whose credentials include the Oscar-nominated gothic film “Shadow of a Vampire.”
Behind the scenes: production and expertise
Pre-production is already underway in Alberta, Canada, boasting a stellar crew. Among them is Hollywood’s prominent animal trainer, Andrew Simpson, whose notable projects include “The Revenant,” “John Wick 3,” and “Game of Thrones.” This ensures that the animal portrayals in “Howl” will be authentic and captivating.
As stated by Pulsar Content’s Marie Garrett and Gilles Sousa, executive producers of the film, “‘Howl’ is an edge-of-the-seat adventure film made for a large international audience. The script is impressive both in terms of entertainment and thought-provoking elements.” Their aim is to keep the narrative firmly from the animals’ perspectives, avoiding any anthropomorphism to provide a closer sense of their natural states and the impacts of human actions on their lives.
A strong team behind the project
The strength lies not only in the narrative and directorial vision but also in the experienced and passionate team backing the project. Director Elias Merhige brings a unique visionary expertise, while Andrew Simpson’s methods as a “wolf whisperer” have been universally praised by wildlife defenders.
Additionally, ambassadors like Jane Goodall and Leonardo DiCaprio lend their influential support to the film. With such a robust backing, “Howl” promises to be more than just an entertaining movie–it’s positioned to become a significant nature event on a global scale.
Producing and co-producing talents
The production team includes Richard Johns of Promethean Pictures and Fabrice Lambot of Phase 4 Productions, with co-production by Léo Maidenberg’s Place du Marché and XYZ Films handling U.S. representation alongside Pulsar.
Fabrice Lambot highlights the extraordinary nature of “Howl,” calling it an entertaining and inspiring project. With Pulsar Content now in the mix, they aim to spread the film’s message worldwide and explore building a larger “Howl” universe that resonates with all age groups.
Continuing the legacy
The executive production team expands further to include notable figures like T.P. Lim from Malaysia’s Infinitus Entertainment. Lim orchestrates the Malaysian Chapter of Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots program. Other key figures are Datuk Seri Robin Tan, chairman of Infinitus Entertainment Group, and Jment Lim, founder of Sunstrong Entertainment, known for promoting films with significant social causes in Asia.
Appian Way Productions, co-founded by DiCaprio, is also part of the executive production team, with Jennifer Davisson and Michael Hampton contributing.
A promising lineup
Pulsar Content’s current lineup speaks volumes about their commitment to unique and high-quality projects. Among these is “The Opera!,” an ambitious musical featuring Vincent Cassel, Fanny Ardant, and Rossy De Palma, and Joséphine Japy’s directorial debut “The Wonderers,” starring Mélanie Laurent, Pierre-Yves Cardinal, and Angelina Woreth. Both films are set to screen at the AFM.
Given the involvement of top-tier talent and multifaceted production teams, “Howl” is set to deliver a profoundly moving experience that goes beyond traditional cinema. With its emphasis on understanding and coexisting with nature, it aligns perfectly with the contemporary environmental narrative.
