Mikey Madison hosts special screening for sex workers in celebration of ‘Anora’

A heartfelt moment for ‘Anora’ star

For Mikey Madison, starring in the award-winning film Anora not only meant stepping into the shoes of a challenging character but also creating a special moment for a community often overlooked. In the film, Madison portrays a New York sex worker entangled with the son of a Russian oligarch. But beyond the glitz of winning the Palme d’Or for director Sean Baker‘s creation in May, Madison found her highlight in hosting a screening for real-life sex workers and strippers.

“That was something I wanted to do for a long time,” Madison shared emotionally. “It’s the most important thing because the movie is for sex workers. Just to walk in and see these amazing women clapping with their heels, giving us applause—it was beautiful.”

LA premiere and 35mm film scan

Madison, joined by Baker and the rest of the leading cast, celebrated Anora‘s LA premiere outside Los Angeles’ Vista Theater. This event was unique as it featured the first screening of the film’s 35mm film scan, adding a nostalgic touch to the urban story.

The rigorous preparation behind Ani

Intensive training and emotional insight

Madison revealed that the role demanded months of intensive dance training and conditioning. She described it as the most challenging physical preparation she’s ever undergone for a film. This rigorous training not only sculpted her physically but also exposed her to the profound emotional strain that professional stripping can entail.

“I was ripped, like my whole body. Never in my life have I had that much chest strength,” Madison explained. “It completely opened my eyes to this line of work and these women who do a job that is so physically demanding and psychologically demanding. You have to emotionally connect with the client and dance in a really difficult way. It’s a very complex line of work.”

Baker’s inspiration for casting Madison

The journey to becoming Ani

Baker had been eyeing Madison since her compelling performance in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. However, it was her role in the 2022 Scream reboot that solidified her as the perfect choice for Ani.

“In Scream, she was playing a young woman who was fun and cool of attitude, and really could hold her own. She had a very interesting physicality and face. I knew she was going to photograph so well,” Baker reflected.

Adding to Baker’s thoughts, producer Samantha Quan praised Madison’s unparalleled talent and on-screen magnetism.

“There is only one Mikey Madison. Anything you’ve ever seen her in, she is so talented and magnetic in a way that no one else is. Even in smaller parts, you just can’t stop watching.”

Anora is set to hit theaters on October 18th, promising audiences a raw portrayal of an often-stigmatized industry through a compelling narrative and stunning cinematography.
