A dramatic finale: Venom’s last dance
SPOILER ALERT: Major spoilers ahead for “Venom: The Last Dance,” currently in theaters.
The unveiling of “Venom: The Last Dance” set the stage for intense speculation among fans. Is this truly the final bow for Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock and his alien symbiote, Venom? Both Hardy and director Kelly Marcel have indicated that this third movie concludes the trilogy, and the narrative seems to bear this out.
Venom’s ultimate sacrifice
In a climactic showdown, Venom heroically sacrifices himself to save Eddie from a ferocious pack of xenophages—monstrous creatures relentless in their pursuit of symbiotes. The duo finds themselves besieged at Area 51, where government experiments on symbiotes have unleashed unforeseen chaos. As they liberate the captive symbiotes, a fierce battle erupts involving Venom, Eddie, and a group of symbiote-infected scientists and soldiers. It culminates near a gigantic vat of acid, with Venom detaching from Eddie to ensnare the xenophages with his malleable form. In a poignant farewell, Venom bids Eddie goodbye before plunging himself and the xenophages into the acid, annihilating them.
A new chapter in New York
With Venom now gone, Eddie sets out for New York City, fulfilling Venom’s lingering dream of visiting the Big Apple. The final scenes show Eddie gazing thoughtfully at the Statue of Liberty, symbolizing a new and uncertain future.
Symbiotes still at large
Despite Venom’s demise, the symbiote saga is far from over. Juno Temple’s character, Dr. Payne, morphs into a purple symbiote with incredible speed, attributed to a childhood lightning strike, and she retains these powers by the film’s end. In a tantalizing post-credits scene, Cristo Fernández’s bartender is seen emerging from the ruins of Area 51. The camera lingers on a vial containing Payne’s symbiote, which a cockroach touches, receiving a jolt of electricity. This subtle hint suggests that Fernández’s character might possess unforeseen abilities, much like the cockroach’s resilience to nuclear fallout.
Knull’s ominous warning
The mid-credits scene reintroduces Knull, the foreboding King in Black, voiced by Andy Serkis. He delivers a chilling proclamation: “Your champion has fallen, the King in Black is awake. Your world will burn, and you will watch!” But who is Knull?
Knull is a relatively recent addition to the Marvel Universe, debuting in 2018. Despite his newness, his roots run deep within the cosmic lore. Introduced as a godlike entity of darkness, Knull predates many known cosmic beings, such as the Celestials. He’s exiled after slaying a Celestial, with the severed head later becoming Knowhere, the space station featured in “Guardians of the Galaxy.” It was from this potent Celestial energy that he forged the first symbiotes.
Knull’s expansive legacy
Knull’s story is vast and intricate. After creating an army of symbiotes, they eventually rebel and confine him on the planet Klyntar—essentially a living prison. In present-day Marvel lore, Knull escapes, leading an invasion of Earth with his symbiotic army, forcing an alliance between the Avengers and Venom.
Revered as one of Marvel’s most formidable villains, Knull’s appearance in Venom 3 might be limited, but his potential is enormous. Although there are no confirmed plans to extend his arc, Marcel is open to exploring deeper symbiote tales.
“This is just the beginning for Knull,” she shares. “Such an expansive character cannot be confined to a single appearance. We’ve only scratched the surface. There are countless symbiote stories to tell, and this film hints at many possibilities.”
Future possibilities for Eddie, Venom, and beyond
Marvel and Sony’s ongoing collaboration ensures that the symbiote saga could intersect with upcoming projects. They are currently scripting Tom Holland’s fourth “Spider-Man” movie, which might bridge Eddie’s storyline with that of Peter Parker’s. Eddie’s move to New York sets the stage for potential encounters with Spider-Man, paving the way for thrilling crossovers and new adventures.
In the evolving landscape of superhero cinema, the intrigue surrounding Venom, Knull, and the symbiote lore continues to grow. Fans are encouraged to stay engaged with the latest updates and share their excitement on social media or follow the site for future insights and news.
