Love Nature: A Decade of Growth and New Leadership
Love Nature, the renowned wildlife and nature channel, is celebrating its 10th anniversary with significant global expansion and exciting changes in its leadership team. As the channel evolves, there’s an undeniable wave of anticipation in the air. Here’s a closer look at the transformations and ambitious future plans that shape this milestone.
A major leadership promotion
In a remarkable move, Blue Ant Media has elevated Alison Barrat, previously senior VP of production and development, to senior VP, head of content. This promotion signifies not only Barrat’s outstanding contributions but also Love Nature’s strategic focus on robust content creation and distribution.
Barrat’s new role encompasses leading the channel’s global content strategy including original commissioning, acquisitions, programming, and marketing. Her dynamic vision is set to drive Love Nature towards even greater heights.
Strategic vision and new milestones
Alison Barrat will continue to report to Carlyn Staudt, who herself was recently promoted to executive VP of global channels and streaming at Blue Ant Media. Staudt’s role is pivotal as she spearheads the company’s portfolio of international channels, ensuring growth and consistency in content quality.
Staudt reflects on Barrat’s capabilities, noting, “Alison has excelled at elevating the quality, breadth, and contemporary appeal of Love Nature’s original programming. Her new role is a natural progression given the incredible results she’s achieved.”
Expanding globally: Reaching new audiences
Marking a decade since its inception as a Canadian specialty pay TV channel, Love Nature now boasts availability in 110 countries and 29 languages. The channel’s reach extends to approximately 400 million households worldwide through both pay TV and streaming platforms in 4K. It’s a significant leap from its origins, showcasing its successful adaptation and growth in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
Reflecting on this incredible journey, Barrat shares, “The highlight has actually been the journey. Every new project was a fresh challenge, bringing a sense of excitement and discovery.”
Innovating with FAST channels
A significant turning point came in 2020 when Love Nature embraced the emerging landscape of FAST (free ad-supported streaming TV) in the U.S. market. The channel ventured boldly into this space, bypassing traditional pay TV models.
“Our push into FAST was a decisive moment,” says Staudt. “The rapid growth in audience engagement validated our efforts, proving the viability of 24/7 wildlife programming.”
Bold content innovation
Love Nature continues to innovate in natural history programming, offering fresh, engaging content. Notable examples include “Survival of the Beast” featuring survivalist Max Djenohan and “The Hungry Games: Alaska’s Big Bear Challenge,” a series that explores bear behavior in preparation for hibernation.
Barrat expresses her enthusiasm for innovative storytelling: “Finding new ways to tell stories and expanding the genre has been a thrilling challenge. Collaborating with diverse partners and production companies keeps our content fresh and exciting.”
Diverse on-screen talent
A key strategy for Love Nature involves diversifying its on-screen talent. The channel works with hosts like Lizzie Daly, Dan O’Neill, and Max Djenohan, bringing a variety of global perspectives to its programming.
Barrat emphasizes this approach, saying, “Our diverse on-screen talent mirrors our global audience. We aim for a broad representation, providing viewers with relatable, authentic voices from around the world.”
Eyeing the Asia-Pacific region
Looking ahead, Love Nature is strategically targeting the Asia-Pacific region for further international expansion. Establishing business operations in Sydney and Singapore, the company is poised to tap into the innovative content delivery methods emerging in this dynamic market.
“Asia is an exciting frontier for us. We’re eager to engage with the unique opportunities it offers and enhance our presence meaningfully,” says Staudt.
Embracing the future: 8K technology and VR
As technology advances, Love Nature is preparing for the shift to 8K production and distribution. Staudt notes the challenges and opportunities: “We’re already shooting in 8K, anticipating industry-wide adoption and technological advancements. We’ll be ready when the transition happens.”
Moreover, the channel is exploring virtual reality (VR) platforms to meet viewers where they are, expanding its reach and offering immersive, innovative content experiences.
The road ahead
As Love Nature enters its second decade, both Barrat and Staudt are optimistic about the brand’s future. Barrat reflects, “I firmly believe in the positive trajectory of our genre. We’re committed to producing high-quality, relevant content and eagerly anticipate what lies ahead.”
