Will Smith to inspire at Saudi Film Confex in Riyadh
Hollywood star set to open the event
The highly anticipated Saudi Film Confex is just around the corner, and this year, it’s bringing a heavy hitter from Hollywood. Will Smith will grace the opening day, scheduled from October 9-12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Recognized globally as an Oscar-winning actor, Smith’s presence promises to elevate the event’s prestige.
A landmark achievement with Bad Boys: Ride or Die
Smith’s influence in Saudi Arabia is already monumental. His film, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, shattered records by becoming the highest-grossing film in the country, clocking an impressive 1.7 million admissions since its July 25 release. The actor has made several visits to the kingdom this past year, participating in the premiere of Bad Boys in Riyadh and speaking at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah. During his stay, he also explored Neom, a burgeoning film production hub in the north-western part of Saudi Arabia, that has already attracted significant projects such as Rupert Wyatt’s Desert Warrior.
Industry experts unite for Saudi’s cinematic future
The Saudi Film Confex is designed to be more than just a gathering; it’s an initiative to shape the future of the film industry within the kingdom. Smith is set to share his wealth of experience and creative insights during a prominent discussion session. His reflections on his career are expected to serve as an inspiration for aspiring and established filmmakers alike.
Vision 2030 and the rebirth of Saudi cinema
Promoted by the Saudi Film Commission and aligned with the Saudi Vision 2030, the event is part of a broader governmental strategy aimed at diversifying the country’s economy and cultural landscape. This vision was a pivotal factor behind the reopening of movie theaters in Saudi Arabia in 2018 after a 40-year hiatus.
The inaugural edition in 2023 was a massive success, attracting 60,000 attendees from 19 different countries. This year, the aim is to surpass these figures, targeting at least 65,000 attendees from over 25 countries. The Confex aims to give visibility to Saudi’s growing filming locations, create a platform for local professionals to share their expertise, and foster talent development. It also seeks to attract partnerships between leading local and international companies.
A timely boost with new film fund
The timing of the Saudi Film Confex couldn’t be better. It coincides with the recent launch of a $100 million film fund in September, aimed at drawing investments from global film studios to bolster Saudi Arabia’s burgeoning local film industry.
Workshops and panel discussions: A treasure trove of insights
Over four days, the event will feature over 30 panel discussions and workshops. Topics will range from film financing and distribution to exhibition and industry regulations. Attendees will also benefit from an exhibition showcasing more than 130 local, regional, and international companies specializing in various aspects of film production, smart studio construction, and cutting-edge technology.
The Film Talks segment will include some fascinating sessions. The creative duo Godus Brothers will delve into their latest film, Fever Dreams, which debuted at the 2023 Red Sea Film Festival. Ahmed Almulla, often referred to as “the godfather of Saudi cinema,” will reflect on the evolution of Saudi film festivals. Additionally, there will be a conversation with Fursan Quraih director Abdullah Bamajboor and producer Osama Alkhurayji about the emerging wave of Saudi drama.
Masterclasses and the future of film innovation
The Confex will feature a series of masterclasses with a strong focus on innovation. Philipp Chudalla, with experience in films like Geostorm and the Saudi-shot Desert Warrior, will present the latest in camera and lighting technologies. Egyptian cinematographer Mostafa Fahmy will offer practical solutions for lighting without professional gear, and Guy Norris from PROXi Virtual Production will explore advancements in virtual production.
Themes to watch out for
Among the key themes for panel discussions will be the consultation of regional agencies, the importance of film archives, and the realities of the acting world in Saudi Arabia. Panels will also explore the differences between government and private sector funding, the impact of artificial intelligence and new technologies, and the significant role of cinema in promoting tourism.
