Zachary Levi ignites Hollywood debate with Trump endorsement
Zachary Levi has stepped into a political storm, taking to Instagram to counter Whoopi Goldberg’s claim that Hollywood has “always been a very right-leaning town.” The debate sparked after Levi endorsed Donald Trump for president, which Goldberg addressed during an episode of “The View.”
The liberal vs. conservative debate in Hollywood
In his Instagram video, Levi highlighted what he sees as a liberal dominance in Hollywood, calling out Goldberg’s assertion. Goldberg, surprised by Levi’s endorsement, argued that Hollywood is a “mixed bunch” with both Democrat and Republican actors thriving in the industry. She cited examples like Jon Voight and Dennis Quaid to support her point, dismissing Levi’s claim as ”more B.S.”
Levi, however, countered, challenging the notion that Hollywood is politically balanced. He emphasized that those on the conservative side often fear repercussions, stating, “You really have to be at a certain level of your career to get away with being an outspoken Republican in Hollywood.”
The fear of political retaliation
Levi went on to argue that the lack of prominent conservative voices in Hollywood is proof of the industry’s liberal slant. He pointed out that Goldberg could only mention two Republican actors, noting, “Of the thousands of actors in Hollywood, that you could only name two actually speaks to that.”
According to Levi, many actors in Hollywood support Trump but remain silent due to fear of backlash. “There are plenty of people in my industry who are terrified to publicly say they would vote for Donald Trump or be conservative in any way,” he shared. This fear, Levi suggests, keeps conservative voices from being prevalent or prominent in the industry.
Hollywood’s evolving political landscape
Levi also touched on the challenges the entertainment industry is facing, including the impact of the pandemic and ongoing strikes, which he feels have already eroded the industry significantly. He urged other conservative actors to find their courage, declaring, “My cry to all of you out there, you closeted Trump voters, it’s now or never. Do whatever you feel like you need to do.”
However, Levi carefully avoided pressuring anyone into a public declaration, emphasizing understanding of their fears: ”If you feel like you still can’t [come out publicly], then don’t. I would never pressure you to do that.”
The rally in Michigan
Levi’s political stance was made even more public when he officially endorsed Trump at a rally in Michigan on September 28. Prior to this, Levi had been backing Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for the presidency. However, following Kennedy’s decision to drop out, Levi shifted his support to Trump. During the “Team Trump’s Reclaim America Tour” event, Levi introduced Kennedy and former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard to the stage, further solidifying his commitment to the Trump campaign.
Reflecting on Hollywood’s future
Levi’s stance has undoubtedly ignited debates within the industry and among fans. His comments reflect a broader tension within Hollywood about political expression and the consequences of taking a public stance. As the industry continues to navigate these changing dynamics, Levi’s message resonates: “Know that if what you’re afraid of is somehow the backlash of an industry that’s not going to exist very soon, then don’t let that hold you back.”
The discourse between Levi and Goldberg encapsulates the changing political landscape in Hollywood, sparking conversations around freedom of speech, career risks, and the future of the entertainment industry. Whether his actions will inspire others to speak out or reinforce existing fears remains to be seen.
