Tiger Baby champions unscripted content with unique Indian stories
Embracing uncaptured narratives
Tiger Baby Productions, helmed by notable filmmakers, is boldly stepping into the unscripted realm. Their goal is to present authentic and unfiltered Indian narratives through documentaries and series. Unveiling unseen aspects of diverse Indian lifestyles, this initiative is set to redefine storytelling.
Spotlight on ‘turtle walker’
One of the groundbreaking projects is “Turtle Walker,” directed by Taira Malaney. This documentary recounts conservationist Satish Bhaskar’s incredible mission to safeguard India’s sea turtles. Bhaskar’s extensive walk along the Indian coastline not only highlights his dedication but also serves as a beacon of hope for marine conservation efforts. The film is already drawing accolades, securing the Grand Teton Award at the Jackson Wild Media Awards.
Akhtar remarked, “Satish is a hero in the truest sense, although he might not see himself that way. His tireless efforts have significantly impacted the conservation of sea turtles, preventing their extinction. His story is monumental and inspiring.”
Exploring the underrepresented: ‘In transit’
In collaboration with Amazon Studios, another anticipated project, “In Transit,” delves into the lives of transgender individuals from India. This nine-part docu-series sheds light on a marginalized community often overlooked by mainstream media. It presents authentic experiences and challenges faced by transgender people in the heartland of India.
Akhtar shared, “This series seeks to give a voice to the trans community. Their stories are largely untold, and we aim to explore their journeys, challenges, and triumphs intimately.”
A track record of storytelling excellence
Both filmmakers have illustrious careers, with Akhtar known for masterpieces like “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” and “Gully Boy”, and Kagti for films such as “Talaash” and ”Gold.” Their previous works, including beloved series like “Made in Heaven” and Dahaad, display their ability to craft compelling narratives that resonate widely.
Venturing into diverse formats
Tiger Baby’s inaugural unscripted release, “Angry Young Men,” chronicles the prolific journey of the legendary screenwriting duo Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. This three-part series not only captures their professional milestones but also unveils their personal dynamics.
“Our passion for documentaries naturally extends to our commissioning philosophy,” Akhtar explained. “We believe every story has its unique medium. Our goal is to enable these stories to reach audiences who may not have ever been exposed to them.”
A holistic approach to content creation
Expanding beyond documentaries, Tiger Baby is making strides in various creative fronts. Tiger Telly, their division for advertising and brand collaborations, has been active for over two years, creating impactful campaigns. They are also venturing into the music scene with Tiger Baby Records, in partnership with frequent collaborator Ankur Tewari. The label aims to explore and promote indie and folk music from across India.
“TBR aims to transcend traditional music boundaries,” Kagti stated. “While we start with music, we envision exploring everything related to sound, including podcasts and radio plays.”
Aligning heart with art
The duo emphasizes the importance of emotional resonance in their work. Commercial success, they argue, should follow genuine creative expression. Kagti asserted, “Our projects must move us first. We believe that if a story resonates with us, it will connect with others as well.”
Akhtar elaborated, “Our ultimate aim is to foster understanding, empathy, and inspire new thoughts through our work.”
Tiger Baby’s foray into unscripted content marks a significant shift in how Indian stories are told. By focusing on heartfelt and impactful narratives, they strive to give voice to untold stories, enriching the cultural tapestry.
