Angelina Jolie will be honored with the Desert Palm Achievement Award – Actress at the upcoming Palm Springs International Film Awards for her role in Netflix’s “Maria.”
“Maria presents the iconic Angelina Jolie in the role of a lifetime as she embodies Maria Callas, the world-renowned opera legend,” said Nachhattar Singh Chandi, Festival Chairman. “Jolie’s extraordinary portrayal captures the heart and complexity of an artist whose life was as captivating as her music.”
Jolie’s recognitions adds to a lineup of other recipients, including Adrien Brody, Nicole Kidman and Colman Domingo.
Past recipients of the Actress Award include Emma Stone, Cate Blanchett, Viola Davis, and Renée Zellweger, all of whom received Oscar nominations during their respective years.
Popular on Variety Directed by Pablo Larraín, “Maria” follows the famed opera singer Maria Callas as she navigates her final days in Paris, reflecting on her identity and legacy after a tumultuous career. The film also stars Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher and Kodi Smit-McPhee.
The film will open in select theaters on Nov. 27 before streaming on Netflix starting Dec. 11.
Jolie won an Oscar for her turn in James Mangold’s drama “”Girl, Interrupted” (1999). In addition, she’s directed many acclaimed films like “First They Killed My Father.” Beyond film, Jolie champions environmental conservation, education initiatives, and sustainable fashion through Atelier Jolie.
The ceremony is set for Jan. 3 at the Palm Springs Convention Center during the Palm Springs International Film Festival, which runs from Jan. 2-13.
