Taiwan Creative Content Fest: A new epoch for Asian creators
Celebrating creativity and collaboration in Taipei
Tuesday morning marked an exciting moment in Taipei as officials and filmmakers came together to celebrate the Taiwan Creative Content Fest (TCCF). This event, held at the state-of-the-art Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, is seen as a crucial platform for local and Asian creators to elevate their work onto the global stage. Running from November 5-8, it is spearheaded by the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA).
Ambitious goals for future growth
Speaking at the inauguration, Deputy Minister at Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, Sue Wang, expressed her high expectations for TCCF. She emphasized, “We have great ambitions for TCCF in the years going forward.” Her optimism is a reflection of Taiwan’s commitment to fostering creative industries and pushing for international recognition.
Big prizes and bold collaborations
A highlight of this year’s festival is the substantial prize pool of NT7.5 million ($235,000) set for the centerpiece project pitching event. Homme Tsai, chair of TAICCA, optimistically noted, “People will reach out to each other saying – ‘show me the money, let’s collaborate.’” This sentiment encapsulates the festival’s spirit of co-creation and financial incentive.
A journey from humble beginnings
TCCF’s growth has been nothing short of transformative. Wang recalled the festival’s origins as a modest exhibition platform, which has now evolved into one of the leading B2B events globally. “This really highlights the importance we have placed on the content creation industries not just at home, but around the world,” she remarked. Wang’s insights highlight Taiwan’s strategic investment in creative industries aiming for both domestic and international impact.
Fostering private sector momentum
The festival’s dynamic atmosphere is underpinned by a vision to foster private sector momentum. As Wang stated, “Money cannot buy everything, but it can start something.” The financial incentives provided by TAICCA are designed to enable Taiwanese creatives to tell their stories on a global scale, thereby setting the stage for the local talent to shine internationally.
Enhancing storytelling and production value
Dr. Lu Jiun Wei, CEO of TAICCA, shed light on the future strategy to improve the quality of storytelling. “We already have good stories and topics in Taiwan from the local people, but what we need to improve is storytelling. We wanted to learn the international ways of storytelling, so that we can promote and push Taiwanese local content to the international market,” he explained. This vision aims to attract more international co-productions and co-funding opportunities, providing local creators with the tools to make their stories resonate globally.
Taiwan’s rising profile in East Asian media
Recent years have seen a significant rise in Taiwan’s profile within the East Asian film and TV production scene. This is partly due to sustained efforts by the Taiwanese authorities to support and structure the industry, along with financial backing and the initiatives of agencies like TAICCA. As regional dynamics change, multinational media groups are increasingly turning to Taiwan, especially as collaborations with Hong Kong and mainland China become more complex.
Diverse narratives and creative freedom
Dr. Lu highlighted Taiwan’s unique strengths, stemming from its distinct narratives and creative liberties. “These things come from the stories here in Taiwan. We have diverse topics here, like BL [‘boys love’] and girls love. Those topics are not allowed to be presented in China. We talk with our international partners because these unique topics can only be found in Taiwan,” he said. The diversity of topics and the creative freedom to tell these stories are seen as core strengths that set Taiwan apart.
Expanding opportunities at TCCF 2021
This year, TCCF hosts over 100 market booths, up from 90 the previous year. The pitching event has attracted submissions from more than 600 projects across over 50 countries and territories, showcasing the increasing interest and participation in Taiwan’s creative landscape.
