From talent show to solo star
Kang’s journey in the music industry began at the age of 20 when he won the second season of the popular Korean music competition show Produce 101. This victory secured him a spot in the temporary boy group Wanna One, where he quickly became a fan favorite. After a successful year and a half with the group, he decided to embark on a solo career, with his loyal supporters, now known as FLOWD, following him every step of the way.
A multifaceted artist
Since launching his solo career, Kang Daniel has released several critically acclaimed albums in Korea. His talents extend beyond singing; he made an impressive acting debut in the 2022 mini-series Rookie Cops, Disney+’s first Korean original series. Additionally, he has demonstrated his versatility by hosting the immensely popular dance competition series Street Woman Fighter and its spinoffs, Street Dance Girls Fighter and Street Man Fighter.
A new chapter with “Act”
Now, Kang Daniel marks his return with a new EP titled Act, under his new management company, Artistic Round Alliance (ARA). This move follows the closure of his self-founded agency, Konnect Entertainment, due to embezzlement by a major shareholder. Despite the challenges, Kang sees this release as an opportunity for a fresh start in his artistic journey.
“It’s like restarting,” he explains, describing the process of creating his fifth solo album. “It wasn’t easy to move on from my previous company, but releasing this album feels like continuing my job as an artist again.”
Creating “Act”: Behind the scenes
When asked about the experience of making “Act,” Kang shares that being a solo artist often requires him to act in his music videos. This time, he took on two roles, presenting a new and enriching experience. “It was really enjoyable shooting my music video,” he says.
Though every part of the album release process is significant, Kang admits that filming the music video stands out as his favorite aspect. “Even though it’s part of my job, this time it felt like something brand new,” he adds.
Influence of personal experiences
Kang’s personal journey significantly influences his music. “When I watch movies or drama series, I often think about music, even when I’m trying to relax at home. It’s my hobby, and it sparks my imagination, which in turn influences my work.”
Finding balance
To recharge, Kang prefers the comfort of his home, surrounded by his cats and personal belongings. “Home is everything to me,” he says. “I’ve got cats, my computer, and TV. Just staying at home is my way of recharging.”
Future acting prospects
Kang is open to more acting opportunities in the future. His debut in Rookie Cops initially made him nervous, but he now feels comfortable and eager to take on more roles. “If I get the chance, I’d love to act again,” he says.
Reflections on his career
As a performer with an already long career, Kang aspires to connect with his audience in a meaningful way. “Rather than being someone’s best singer in their memory, I want to be a singer in their playlist, someone they listen to often,” he explains.
