Kelsea Ballerini: Navigating the tides of music and advocacy
Kelsea Ballerini has become a formidable force in the music industry, not only through her captivating songs and dynamic performances but also with her outspoken advocacy on various social issues. At 31, she has etched her name into the annals of country music with an impressive discography and an unwavering commitment to her beliefs.
A decade of transformation
Five albums, four Grammy nominations, and seven Top 10 hits—these achievements are testament to Ballerini’s artistic prowess since the release of her debut album, The First Time, in 2015. Her latest album, Patterns, released on October 25, marks another milestone in a flourishing career that continues to defy convention. Yet, along with her musical success, Ballerini has also faced hurdles by voicing her progressive stances in a traditionally conservative genre.
Making statements with music
Following the footsteps of trailblazers like The Chicks, Ballerini doesn’t shy away from controversy. Her 2023 CMT Music Awards performance, which featured drag queens on stage amid Tennessee’s anti-drag legislation, made headlines and incited debates.
“There’s just so much hate in the world, and it’s so loud,” Ballerini stated in an interview. “That performance was a wakeup call for me, to ensure I’m aligned with being a good person first, a good artist second.”
Advocacy and artistry
In a recent interview, Ballerini openly discussed her advocacy for women’s rights and the LGBTQ community, alongside her new album Patterns. For her, these aren’t just buzzwords but integral aspects of her identity as an artist and individual.
What have you learned about yourself over the past decade?
“I’ve learned so much,” she said. “The core of who I am and what drives me remains unchanged, but everything else in my life has transformed. Songwriting has always been my refuge. Knowing that if the radio stops playing my music or venues become smaller, I can still be a songwriter, gets me through tough times.”
Songs close to her heart
“Sorry Mom” and personal growth
“One of the first songs I wrote for Patterns, ‘Sorry Mom’, holds a special place in my heart. It allowed me to embrace vulnerability and honesty in my current life phase, something I treasure deeply.”
The creative process
Ballerini started writing songs during her parents’ divorce when she was just 12 or 13. Being an only child, she needed an outlet for her “big feelings” and found solace in songwriting.
Why is it essential for you to use your platform for advocacy?
“For a long time, I was afraid of saying the wrong thing. But then I realized, if I anger people by standing for what I believe in, those aren’t the people I want at my shows anyway. It’s important for me to stay true to myself and my beliefs.”
Balancing personal and professional life
Ballerini describes her relationship with actor Chase Stokes as a balancing act of personal and professional commitments.
“We are really teammates in this, celebrating our wins loudly while keeping our private life as normal as possible. Whether it’s grilling in Nashville or taking time off together, these moments ground us.”
Current obsessions
Spicy carbonara topped with parmesan-crusted chicken has been the meal of the year in her house. It’s just one way she balances the extraordinary with the ordinary.
Expanding creative horizons
Producing: “In the beginning, I was a sponge, learning from experienced producers. Over time, I realized my ideas were just as valid. Asking questions and figuring things out myself has been liberating.”
Acting: Initially hesitant, Ballerini recently embraced acting and enjoyed the experience, eager to explore more opportunities in the future.
Overcoming challenges
Comparison: “For years, I looked sideways instead of forward, which hindered my focus and happiness. Overcoming this allowed me to genuinely celebrate others’ successes while staying true to my path.”
Advice for aspiring women in any field
“Remember, you’re not on a clock. If you have a calling, take your time until it feels right. Impatience and doubt are part of the journey, but trust that every decision moves you closer to your goals.”
Discovering Patterns
For newcomers to her music, Ballerini hopes one song will entice them to explore more of her work.
“There are so many corners of me embedded in Patterns. Whether someone hears ‘WAIT!’ or ‘Cowboys Cry Too’, I hope they dive deeper into the album to discover an eclectic mix of styles and stories.”
Defining Kelsea Ballerini
“A double Virgo with a Cancer moon—that’s me,” she laughs. “I cry on a schedule, but it keeps me grounded. Balancing emotions and professionalism is key.”
Kelsea Ballerini’s journey through music and advocacy is a testament to her resilience and authenticity. Her story inspires us to stay true to our values, even when the world challenges us to conform.
