The bad guys are back. In a new trailer for “The Bad Guys 2,” the former criminal outlaws who have been trying to find their place as Good Guys find themselves pulled out of retirement for “one last job” led by an all-female squad.
Speaking with Variety about the sequel, director Pierre Perifel said the first film really left an opportunity for more to be explored: “We leave the bad guys as they’re trying to be good. They’ve paid their debt to society, and they’re about to be released from prison, and there’s a whole arc after that where they’re ready to be accepted by society.”
The original cast return to voice the animal gang: former pickpocket Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell), Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson), Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos) and the expert hacker Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina). Joining the voice cast are Natasha Lyonne, Danielle Brooks and Maria Bakalova.
Perifel explains the gang leader is voiced by Lyonne who plays a snow leopard. He describes her as a “Wolf 2.0. She’s super smart, super strong, cooler and younger than Mr. Wolf. Her second-in-command is a Boar. She’s the opposite of Kitty, this bigger-than-life character with a soft heart, but has childish energy. “ He continues, “The last character is a raven. She’s super dry and sarcastic, and her humor is on point.”
Popular on Variety Based on the books by Aaron Blabey, Perfel and producer Damon Ross tease that audiences can expect “James Bond” meets “Mission: Impossible” animated action. “This is an opportunity for us to open up the world, and for our characters to go outside of Los Angeles.”
Adds Ross, “The books genre hop and we played in the ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ space. Now we get to ratchet things up; action wise, stake wise and set piece wise, and lean into ‘Mission: Impossible.’ Nobody does set pieces better than the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise. We have a pretty, not-so-subtle nod to that.”
The first “Bad Guys” was released in 2022 by DreamWorks Animation and grossed over $250 million worldwide.
“The Bad Guys 2” hits theaters in 2025. Watch the trailer below.
