“Sweetpea,” the darkly comic thriller series led by “Fallout” star Ella Purnell, has been renewed for a second season by Sky and Starz.
The series — in which Purnell plays Rhiannon Lewis, an ignored and under-appreciated young woman who eventually snaps and takes it upon herself to murder those who have wronged her — is produced by See-Saw Films and its Fanboy label in association with Sky Studios. Season two, as per the description, will see “Lewis return with a vengeance as her killer secret continues to spiral, and she becomes more twisted than ever.”
“Being part of Rhiannon’s coming-of-rage journey has been a career highlight for me, and to see fans engage with and relate to our oddball Rhiannon, in all her complexity, feels truly special,” said Purnell, who also exec produces. “I cannot wait for audiences to see what she does next. Stay tuned.”
NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution handles international sales of “Sweetpea” on behalf of Sky Studios.
Popular on Variety “Sweetpea is a highly original, character-driven show, led by the fantastic Ella Purnell, which has captivated audiences around the world,” said Meghan Lyvers, executive director of original scripted for Sky U.K. and Ireland. “Fans have binged this unique, darkly comic thriller and they can’t wait to see what Rhiannon will do next.”
Added Starz president Alison Hoffman: “Ella Purnell’s killer performance captured the journey of a woman finally finding her voice, and we’re thrilled with the response from critics and viewers.”
“Sweatpea” exec producer at Fanboy Patrick Walters, said: “Making Sweetpea has been the most exhilarating of rollercoaster rides, and we’re so excited to be partnering again with Sky Studios, and to have Starz back as the show’s U.S. home for Series 2. Rhiannon already feels like an iconic character and See-Saw and fanboy can’t wait get back into the world of the show with the powerhouse that is Ella Purnell.”
Alongside returning to her murderous ways in “Sweetpea,” Purnell is also gearing up for the second season of Amazon’s hit video game adaptation “Fallout.” Speaking to Variety in October, she said the shoot would be happening in 2025, although had no idea which way the story would go.
“I’ve read nothing. I’m so unprepared,” she said. “My only preparation so far is that I’m attempting to work out — and that’s just me knowing that in six months I’m going to be running up a hill 500 times and trying not to have asthma attack.”
