A new era for Basque and Andalusian cinema: Amania Films and La Claqueta join forces
A strategic partnership to elevate Spanish cinema
In a significant move for the Spanish audiovisual industry, Amania Films from the Basque Country and La Claqueta from Andalusia have announced a strategic partnership. This collaboration aims to enhance their presence both in Spain and internationally, marking a milestone in the cooperation between Basque and Andalusian cinema.
A milestone in cinematic collaboration
The partnership is described as a pivotal moment for both companies, reinforcing their commitment to diversification and mutual growth. The first project under this new alliance is the high-budget serial killer drama-thriller Sacamantecas, directed by Amania’s founder and award-winning filmmaker David Pérez Sañudo. Additionally, they are set to collaborate on a new fiction series, Maddi y las fronteras, based on Edurne Portela’s fictionalized biography of María Josefa Sansberro, a supporter of the French resistance during WWII who perished in a Nazi concentration camp.
Expanding horizons with mutual support
Under the terms of the agreement, La Claqueta will acquire a stake in Amania Films, aiding the company in taking on larger projects. In return, Amania will become a partner in La Claqueta’s Antípodas Film Lab, a post-production entity established four years ago in Seville. This collaboration will see Amania opening a new branch of the facility in the Basque Country, further solidifying their joint efforts.
Maintaining cultural identity while embracing growth
Amania Films, known for producing the Goya-winning feature Ane is Missing, will retain full autonomy in its daily operations and continue to produce films that reflect its Basque cultural identity. The team at Amania will remain intact, with Pérez Sañudo continuing to lead the unit.
“This collaboration allows us to maintain our essence and, at the same time, access new opportunities in the sector. Both companies combine experience and momentum to continue producing in the north of Spain with momentum from the south, and vice versa,” said Pérez Sañudo.
A shared vision for ambitious and global cinema
Olmo Figueredo, founder of La Claqueta and the Antípodas Film Lab, echoed this sentiment, stating, “This agreement is an opportunity to grow together, respecting the identity, editorial line, and unique character of each of our production companies. We want to continue promoting Basque and Andalusian cinema, and this union will allow us to do so in an even more ambitious and global way.”
A history of collaboration and success
La Claqueta has a long history of supporting Basque filmmakers and production companies. They have previously collaborated with San Sebastian-based Irusoin on the documentary 30 Years of Darkness and the multi-Goya-winning fictional feature The Endless Trench. Other notable Basque titles produced by La Claqueta include El Estado contra Pablo Ibar, directed by Figueredo, Los últimos románticos, directed by Pérez Sañudo, and the animated documentary The Longest Journey from director Manuel H. Martín and animation studio Dibulitoon.
Looking ahead
This partnership between Amania Films and La Claqueta represents a significant step forward for both companies, promising to bring more diverse and ambitious projects to the Spanish and international markets. By combining their strengths and resources, they are poised to make a substantial impact on the global cinema landscape.
