Joel and Ellie return in ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2
HBO unveils the first look at the highly anticipated sequel
HBO has just released the first trailer for “The Last of Us” Season 2, bringing back Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. These two characters, beloved by fans of the hit video game adaptation, are set to navigate an even more perilous world in the upcoming season.
A world of danger and survival
The series, which has already garnered eight Emmy Awards and a total of 24 nominations, continues to follow Joel and Ellie as they traverse a post-apocalyptic landscape teeming with zombies infected by a parasitic fungus. But the undead are not their only concern; they must also contend with ruthless vigilantes, mercenaries, and cannibals, all desperate to survive.
Season 2 synopsis
The official logline for Season 2 reads: “After five years of peace following the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie’s collective past catches up to them, drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.”
Adapting the sequel
Just as the first season was adapted from the acclaimed 2013 video game, “The Last of Us”, Season 2 is expected to follow the narrative of its 2020 sequel, “The Last of Us Part II”. This sequel delves into the repercussions of Joel’s actions in the Season 1 finale, promising a storyline rich with emotional depth and moral complexity.
Returning and new faces
Several actors from the first season are set to return. Gabriel Luna will reprise his role as Joel’s brother, Tommy, and Rutina Wesley will return as Tommy’s wife, Maria.
New cast members include Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, and Danny Ramirez as Manny. Additionally, Catherine O’Hara will guest star in an undisclosed role. Jeffrey Wright will portray Issac, the ruthless leader of the Washington Liberation, a Seattle-based faction. Wright will bring to life the character he originally voiced in the video game sequel.
Behind the scenes
The series is written and executive produced by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, both of whom have also directed episodes and will continue to do so in Season 2. Carolyn Strauss and Evan Wells, president of Naughty Dog, are also executive producers, along with PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Jacqueline Lesko, and Cecil O’Connor.
