Chloë Sevigny reflects on her iconic Brat Summer with Charli XCX
A star-studded music video appearance
Chloë Sevigny, known for her versatile roles in film and television, recently reminisced about her memorable summer cameo in Charli XCX’s “360” music video. The actress, who has been making waves with her performance in The Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, shared her experience on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Discovering Charli XCX
Sevigny admitted that she wasn’t initially familiar with Charli XCX. “Honestly, I didn’t know much about her,” she confessed. “I had seen her all over my Instagram. All the girlies, all the kids loved her. And I was like, ‘Who is this Charli XCX?’” Her curiosity piqued when she learned about the other stars involved in the video. “When they told me who else was going to be in the video, and I was like, ‘Rachel Sennott? I’m in.’ I adore that person. I’m in love with her.”
The ensemble cast
The music video for “360” featured a dazzling lineup, including Rachel Sennott, Julia Fox, Emma Chamberlain, Quenlin Blackwell, and Chloe Cherry, among others. Sevigny’s cameo was particularly striking; she appeared stepping out of a black car, dressed in a chic black outfit, cigarette in hand, joining Charli XCX for a stroll down the street.
Embracing the Brat Summer vibe
When Fallon inquired about the concept of Brat Summer, Sevigny shared her initial confusion and subsequent understanding. “I asked the director, ‘So, what’s the mood? What’s the vibe in the video? How should I act?’ And he’s like, ‘Just act like a brat.’ I was like, ‘A brat?’ I mean, I have a 4-year-old. I know what a brat is (Laughs).”
Sevigny decided to put her own spin on the direction. “I can do brat, but I said, ‘I would rather do attitude, you know. I think I’m too old to be a brat.’ I was like, ‘Let’s do sexy attitude.'”
A fun and fresh experience
Reflecting on the shoot, Sevigny described it as “super fun,” emphasizing the importance of keeping things lively and fresh. “You got to keep it alive. Keep it fresh,” she said.
Balancing multiple projects
At the time of the music video shoot, Sevigny was also busy filming Netflix’s The Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story in Los Angeles. Her co-star, Cooper Koch, who portrayed Erik Menendez, encouraged her to participate in the video. “You have to do it,” he told her, and so she did.
Technical analysis of the video
From a technical standpoint, the “360” music video is a masterclass in contemporary pop culture aesthetics. The director’s choice to use a monochromatic color scheme for Sevigny’s scenes adds a layer of sophistication and timelessness. The video’s editing style, characterized by quick cuts and dynamic camera angles, mirrors the energetic and rebellious spirit of Brat Summer.
Industry reflections
The collaboration between Charli XCX and a diverse group of celebrities highlights a growing trend in the music industry: the blending of different entertainment sectors to create multifaceted content. This approach not only broadens the audience reach but also enriches the narrative depth of music videos.
Final thoughts
Sevigny’s participation in the “360” music video is a testament to her versatility and willingness to explore new creative avenues. Her ability to adapt and bring her unique flair to the project underscores her status as a seasoned and respected figure in the entertainment industry.
