Exploring the charm of Netflix’s latest series
Netflix’s new romantic comedy series, “Nobody Wants This”, brings together the dynamic duo of Kristen Bell and Adam Brody. This intriguing premise sets the stage for a series filled with humor, love, and the complexities of faith and relationships.
The allure of Kristen Bell and Adam Brody’s chemistry
A match made in TV heaven
Kristen Bell and Adam Brody have a history of sharing the screen, having previously worked together in “House of Lies” and the 2017 film “CHiPs.” Their on-screen chemistry in “Nobody Wants This” is palpable, making their characters’ journey both relatable and engaging. Brody attributes their seamless rapport to the excellent writing and their ability to mirror their real-life wonderful marriages.
“The way these characters are set up lends themselves to chemistry, and you caring about them and wanting them to be together,” Brody explains.
The secret to on-screen chemistry
Brody believes that the secret to their on-screen chemistry lies in the script. The dialogue is charming and clever, allowing the actors to bring their characters to life effortlessly. He emphasizes the importance of good writing in creating believable and endearing characters.
“If they give you clever things to say, you’re in good shape,” Brody notes.
Diving into the role of a hip rabbi
Research and preparation
To authentically portray a devout rabbi, Brody immersed himself in extensive research. He attended Shabbat services and dinners, listened to podcasts, read books, and watched documentaries. This thorough preparation allowed him to bring depth and authenticity to his character.
“I had a lot of time to read and watch and listen. So I did a lot of podcasts, a lot of books, and a lot of movies and documentaries,” Brody shares.
A deeper connection to faith and religion
Playing a religious character prompted Brody to reflect on faith and spirituality. While he doesn’t consider himself religious, he found the exploration of his character’s devoutness both challenging and enlightening.
“This is the first character I’ve looked at that’s religious. I didn’t look at Seth Cohen as religious. They were Jewish culturally, but they weren’t, to me, referencing God or thinking about God,” Brody explains.
Reflecting on a diverse career
From charming men to psychopaths
Brody’s career has spanned a wide range of roles, from charming men to total psychopaths. In “Nobody Wants This,” he taps into his charm mode, a gear he finds easy to access thanks to the well-written script.
“The character is written as charming, and it’s not just like, ‘Here, it says it’s charming. Now you do it.’ The dialogue is charming, and so it’s just dancing,” Brody says.
Highlighting lesser-known performances
When asked about a performance he’d love to spotlight, Brody mentions “Kid Detective,” a film that holds a special place in his heart. He praises the collaboration with writer-director Evan Morgan and expresses pride in the project.
“I’m a huge fan of Evan Morgan, who wrote and directed it, and also it was more personal to me because we collaborated on it for so long, from inception to release,” Brody reveals.
The enduring legacy of Seth Cohen
A role that defined a generation
Despite his diverse body of work, Brody acknowledges that his role as Seth Cohen in “The O.C.” remains the one he’s most recognized for. The character left a lasting impact on Millennial audiences and continues to be a significant part of his career.
“I think it will always be Seth Cohen, if I’m being honest,” Brody admits.
Subverting expectations
Brody’s career includes roles that play off his persona, such as in “Jennifer’s Body” and “Promising Young Woman.” These projects subvert the nice guy image associated with Seth Cohen, showcasing Brody’s versatility as an actor.
“I think a few projects have done that quite purposely. ‘Promising Young Woman’ is a clear example of casting a bunch of people who are known for their nice guy characters and subverting that,” Brody explains.
A look into personal life
Life with Leighton Meester
Brody is married to actress Leighton Meester, known for her role in “Gossip Girl.” When asked if they ever watch their old shows, Brody humorously notes that channel surfing is a thing of the past. However, he admits that if he stumbled upon “The O.C.” while flipping channels, he might stop to watch for a moment.
“Hypothetically, if I did pass a channel and ‘The O.C.’ was on at that moment, I’m sure I’d stop for a minute and check it out,” Brody says.
