Yash Chopra Foundation launches scholarship program for film industry workers’ children
Honoring a legacy with a new initiative
In a heartfelt tribute to the legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra, the Yash Chopra Foundation has announced a new scholarship program. This initiative, revealed on what would have been Chopra’s 92nd birthday, aims to support the children of low-income workers in the Hindi film industry. These workers are registered members of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees.
Financial support for aspiring filmmakers
The scholarship program is designed to provide substantial financial assistance, offering up to INR 500,000 (approximately $5,975) per student. This support is available for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies in various fields related to the film industry, including mass communication, filmmaking, production, direction, visual arts, cinematography, and animation.
A tribute to a cinematic pioneer
Yash Chopra, who passed away in 2012, was a towering figure in Indian cinema. His career spanned over five decades, during which he directed numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful films. Chopra’s work ranged from gritty dramas to romantic sagas, making him a versatile and influential filmmaker.
The father of romance in Indian cinema
Chopra’s romantic films, such as Silsila, Lamhe, Kabhi Kabhie, Veer-Zaara, Dil To Pagal Hai, Chandni, and Jab Tak Hai Jaan, earned him the title of the father of romance in Indian cinema. His film Waqt popularized the multi-starrer format in Hindi films, while his intense dramas like Deewar and Kaala Patthar are considered all-time classics.
Founding Yash Raj Films
In 1970, Chopra founded Yash Raj Films, which has grown to become one of India’s largest and most successful film production companies. The studio has produced numerous blockbuster films and continues to be a significant player in the Indian film industry.
Empowering the next generation
Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, emphasized the importance of giving back to the industry. “The legendary filmmaker and our founder Yash Chopra always believed in giving back to the Hindi film industry in whichever way possible. His philosophy is ingrained in our company’s culture. So, on his 92nd birth anniversary, we are happy to embark on a mission to empower kids of the Hindi film fraternity,” Widhani said.
A rigorous selection process
The selection process for the scholarship program will include personalized interviews with candidates. This approach ensures that the most deserving students receive the support they need to pursue their dreams. Widhani expressed hope that the initiative would “inspire and empower deserving students to follow their dreams and subsequently make a mark in our film industry.”
A lasting impact
The Yash Chopra Foundation’s scholarship program is more than just financial aid; it is a commitment to nurturing the next generation of filmmakers and artists. By providing opportunities to those who might not otherwise have access to higher education in the arts, the foundation is helping to ensure a diverse and vibrant future for the Hindi film industry.
Continuing the legacy
Yash Chopra’s legacy is not only preserved through his films but also through initiatives like this scholarship program. By supporting the children of film industry workers, the Yash Chopra Foundation is honoring his memory and continuing his mission of giving back to the community.
