FilmSharks acquires global rights to Sandra Gugliotta’s “Irremediable”
A gripping tale of illegal adoption
Buenos Aires-based FilmSharks has secured the global sales rights to Sandra Gugliotta’s upcoming dramatic thriller, “Irremediable”, produced by Argentina’s Magma Cine. This collaboration marks another significant partnership between FilmSharks and one of Latin America’s most dynamic production companies, promising a distinctive directorial vision and a compelling storyline.
Exploring the dark side of adoption
Inspired by real events, “Irremediable” delves into the shadowy world of illegal adoption. The narrative follows Carla, portrayed by Maricel Alvarez, a woman desperate to become a mother. Her journey leads her to Amanda, a pregnant young woman willing to give up her baby. As Carla and her husband Pablo, played by Alberto Ammann, navigate the murky waters of the adoption process, they find themselves entangled in a web of moral dilemmas and unforeseen challenges that test their deepest beliefs. Amanda’s true identity further complicates their situation, shaking their convictions to the core.
A powerhouse production team
The film is produced by Nathalia Videla Peña and Juan Pablo Gugliotta of Magma Cine, alongside Carles Torras of Zabriskie, Catalonia, Spain. Antonio Pita of Prisma Cine, Argentina, joins as a co-producer. Videla Peña emphasizes the film’s relevance, stating, “’Irremediable’ is a story that, with the intensity of a thriller, explores themes deeply relevant to contemporary society, such as desire, moral boundaries, powerlessness in the face of free choice, racial discrimination, obstetric violence, forced or chosen motherhood, social pressures, and ethical dilemmas.”
Sandra Gugliotta’s unique directorial touch
Sandra Gugliotta, a prominent figure in the New Argentine Cinema movement, brings her distinct sensitivity and artistic vision to the project. Her expertise in working with actors and her deep perspective are expected to significantly enhance the film’s atmosphere and emotional depth. Gugliotta’s previous works, including the 2002 drama “A Lucky Day,” the thriller “The Pursuer,” and the documentary “Retiros (in)voluntarios,” showcase her versatility and commitment to storytelling.
The Argentine film industry under threat
Carles Torras expressed his hope for continued collaboration and support for Argentine cinema, which faces challenges under the current political climate. The right-wing government of President Javier Milei has made significant cuts to cultural, educational, and health institutions in an effort to control the country’s hyper-inflation. This has led to protests at major film festivals, including the San Sebastian Festival and the Berlinale, in solidarity with Argentina’s film industry.
Magma Cine’s impressive portfolio
Magma Cine has a notable track record, with credits including “Ardor,” “La Sangre Brota,” and “El Asaltante” by Pablo Fendrik, as well as “Chile ‘76” by Manuela Martelli, which was featured at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight and won a Platino Award for best debut film. This history of producing critically acclaimed films underscores the potential impact of “Irremediable.”
Final thoughts
“Irremediable” promises to be a thought-provoking and emotionally charged film that tackles complex social issues through the lens of a dramatic thriller. With a talented cast, a skilled director, and a dedicated production team, it is poised to make a significant impact on audiences worldwide.
