Animation Is Film Festival 2024: A celebration of animated storytelling
The Animation Is Film Festival is back for its seventh edition, promising a weekend filled with captivating animated features, insightful filmmaker panels, and exclusive premieres. Running from October 18-20, 2024, this year’s festival will be held at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatres in Hollywood, offering a rich lineup that showcases the best in animation from around the globe.
A weekend of premieres and masterclasses
Opening night: A Color Within
Kicking off the festival on October 18 is the North American premiere of “A Color Within,” a melodic and visually stunning feature from the renowned Japanese animation studio Science Saru. Directed by the acclaimed Naoko Yamada, known for her work on “A Silent Voice,” this film promises to be a highlight for fans of Japanese animation. Watch the trailer.
Day two: The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie
On October 19, the festival will feature the North American premiere of Warner Bros. Animation’s “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie.” Directed by the award-winning Pete Browngardt and distributed by Ketchup Entertainment, this film is set to bring the beloved Looney Tunes characters to life in a new and exciting adventure. Closing night: Memoir of a Snail
The festival will conclude on October 20 with the Los Angeles premiere of “Memoir of a Snail,” directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Adam Elliot. This film, which also won the Cristal Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, promises to be a poignant and beautifully crafted story. Watch the trailer.
Celebrating award-winning films and shorts
In addition to the major features, the festival will screen a selection of Annecy Prize-winning films, including “Flow” and “Sultana’s Dream,” as well as the short film “Percebes.” These screenings offer a unique opportunity to experience some of the most innovative and acclaimed works in animation.
Filmmaker panels and special screenings
The festival will also host panels featuring filmmakers from upcoming projects such as “Inside Out 2,” “Moana 2,” “Transformers One,” “The Wild Robot,” and “An Almost Christmas Story.” These panels provide a behind-the-scenes look at the creative processes behind some of the most anticipated animated films.
Other notable screenings include the U.S. premiere of Netflix’s “Mononoke the Movie: Phantom in the Rain,” the North American premiere of the documentary “Miyazaki, Spirit of Nature,” a work-in-progress peek at “Yoppaman,” and a special 15th-anniversary screening of Takeshi Koike’s “Redline.”

Marcel Jean, artistic director, and Mickael Marin, CEO of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, expressed their pride in the ongoing partnership with Animation Is Film. “Through seven editions, Animation Is Film has become a rendez-vous not to be missed for animation lovers. This year, audiences will find an incredible selection that celebrates the best of cinema, and we are especially proud of our short films program within AIF, ‘Best of Annecy WIA,’ which will give theater-goers the opportunity to watch, among others, ‘Percebes’ by Alexandra Ramires and Laura Gonçalves, the recipient of our Cristal Award for a short film earlier this year.”
