SNL’s season premiere: A hilarious take on Charli XCX and pop culture
Bowen Yang channels Charli XCX in a new sketch
The latest season of Saturday Night Live kicked off with a bang, featuring Bowen Yang as the British pop sensation Charli XCX. In a fictional series dubbed “The Talk Talk Show,” Yang’s portrayal was a nod to one of Charli’s popular song titles, setting the stage for a night of laughter and satire.
Troye Sivan and the Sweat Tour
In this segment, Yang welcomed “Australian dingo twink Troye Sivan,” a character currently on the Sweat Tour with Charli XCX. Sarah Sherman took on the role of Sivan, complete with fake washboard abs, adding a layer of humor to the sketch. When asked if he was happy to be there, Sherman’s Sivan responded with a cheeky “Naur!”
Brat or nat: A pop culture verdict
Yang’s Charli XCX then evaluated recent events, labeling them as either “brat” or “nat.” The results were as follows:
- Hunter Biden’s laptop: “brat”
- Mark Robinson’s search history: “nat”
- Barron Trump going to NYU: “brat”
- NYU itself: “nat”
- Amy Adams in ‘Nightbitch’: “brat”
- Eric Adams’ indictment: “nat”
Special guests on ’The Talk Talk Show’
The sketch continued with the introduction of “queer nightlife icon Susanne Bartsch” and “hetero CNN icon Kaitlan Collins,” portrayed by Jean Smart and Chloe Fineman, respectively. Yang’s Charli XCX directed political questions to Smart’s Bartsch and more personal inquiries, like “Have you ever done ketamine?” to Fineman’s CNN anchor.
The bad girl of C-SPAN
Ego Nwodim then appeared as U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett from Texas, the “bad girl of C-SPAN.” Nwodim’s Crockett offered unfiltered opinions on various topics, from JD Vance (“smoky-eyed sofa-sexual can’t order donuts but has donut body”) to gerrymandering (“crazy-shaped crooked bitch”).
Charli XCX’s ‘Brat’ album: A cultural phenomenon
Charli XCX’s sixth studio album, Brat, released on June 7, quickly became a cultural and political touchstone. With its hyperpop-influenced club bangers and slime-green aesthetic, it dominated the summer. The album inspired TikTok dances and memes, even catching the attention of the Kamala Harris campaign, which briefly adopted the “brat” moniker.
Live performances and upcoming releases
Charli XCX brought the Brat experience to New York a week before the SNL premiere, performing at Madison Square Garden with Troye Sivan and special guests Lorde and Addison Rae. Fans can look forward to a Brat remix album set to release on October 11.
SNL’s milestone season
Saturday Night Live launched its 50th season on September 28 with host Jean Smart and musical guest Jelly Roll. The iconic sketch comedy series will celebrate its golden anniversary with a live primetime special on February 16. Catch the show on NBC at 11:30 p.m. ET or stream it on Peacock.
