Warwick Thornton to direct epic film on Aboriginal resistance fighter Pemulwuy
A cinematic journey into Australia’s past
Warwick Thornton, one of Australia’s most acclaimed filmmakers, is set to direct “First Warrior,” an epic film that delves into the life of Aboriginal resistance fighter Pemulwuy. This project promises to be a significant cinematic event, with a stellar team both in front of and behind the camera.
The historical backdrop
Australia’s colonization began in the late 1700s, a period marked by significant conflict and resistance. Pemulwuy, a member of the Bidjigal tribe from what is now modern-day Sydney, led a 12-year resistance against British settlers encroaching on his people’s traditional lands. His story is one of resilience and defiance, making it a compelling subject for a feature film.
The creative team
The film’s core creators are an all-Indigenous team, ensuring authenticity and respect for the story being told. Warwick Thornton, known for his award-winning work on “Samson and Delilah” and “Sweet Country,” will direct the film. The script is penned by Jon Bell, whose previous works include “The Moogai” and “Cleverman.” Andrew Dillon, a writer-producer with credits like “Le Champion” and “Outliers,” will also contribute to the screenplay.
Dillon, a direct descendant of both the Dharug and Gomeroi people, will produce the film through his company, That’s-A-Wrap Productions. This Indigenous First Nations owned and operated production company is dedicated to bringing authentic Indigenous stories to the screen.
Industry heavyweights join the project
The film has attracted significant talent from the industry. Stuart Beattie, the Oscar-winning screenwriter known for “Collateral” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” has joined the project. Additionally, Phillip Noyce, director of “Rabbit-Proof Fence” and “Salt,” and Shana Levine, known for “The Portable Door” and “Charlie & Boots,” are also on board.
Casting and production
The search is currently underway to cast the pivotal roles of Pemulwuy and Bennelong, the latter being an Indigenous Australian who was kidnapped by Governor Arthur Phillip to initiate dialogue with the Indigenous communities. Sam Worthington, known for his roles in “Avatar” and “Hacksaw Ridge,” and Jason Clarke, who recently starred in “Oppenheimer,” are already confirmed to star in the film.
Support from Indigenous communities
The film has garnered support from the Bidjigal, Dharawal, and Dharug Elders, ensuring that the portrayal of Pemulwuy’s story is both respectful and accurate. This backing is crucial for a project that aims to shed light on a significant yet often overlooked part of Australia’s history.
Warwick Thornton’s illustrious career
Born in Alice Springs, Warwick Thornton began his career as a DJ and cinematographer before transitioning to filmmaking. His debut feature, “Samson and Delilah,” won the Camera d’Or at Cannes in 2009. He has since directed “Sweet Country,” which received critical acclaim, and “The New Boy,” which was a contender at Cannes last year. Thornton also directed episodes of the TV series “Mystery Road,” a franchise that his son, Dylan River, has since expanded.
Reflections from the creators
Warwick Thornton expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “I am so honored to be a part of this amazing film. It’s an important story with an awesome script and legendary actors.” Andrew Dillon added, “It has been a lifelong goal of mine to have our Indigenous warriors celebrated on the silver screen. I can’t wait for audiences to not only experience Warwick’s vision for this story but to leave the cinema with a newfound appreciation of Australia’s shared history.”
A film to look forward to
“First Warrior” promises to be a powerful and poignant film that brings to light the story of Pemulwuy and his resistance against colonization. With a talented and dedicated team behind it, this film is set to make a significant impact on audiences worldwide.
