Unveiling the unseen: A deeper look into “Love Is Blind” Season 7
Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers from the first six episodes of “Love Is Blind” Season 7, now available on Netflix.
A new twist in the narrative
“Love Is Blind” has always been known for its unique approach to matchmaking, but Season 7 introduced a fresh element. For the first time, the journey of a couple, Brittany Wisniewski and Leo Braudy, was documented from their pod conversations to their engagement and meeting. However, a surprising twist came when a title card revealed that they were not chosen to continue their journey on the show.
“Brittany and Leo were not one of the six couples chosen by producers to continue their journey in Mexico,” the card shown midway through the fifth episode read. “They took their own trip to Mexico and broke off their engagement weeks later.”
This raises an intriguing question: Why feature them at all if they weren’t going to be followed? Chris Coelen, the creator and executive producer, sheds light on this decision.
Behind the scenes: The production process
Chris Coelen, the founder and CEO of Kinetic Content, explains the complexities of producing a non-scripted show like “Love Is Blind.”
“There are different ways that non-scripted shows are produced. Sometimes you have an idea of where things are going while you’re filming. And we don’t. We film everything as it happens, and then after it ends, we piece together how we got there,” Coelen explains.
The budget constraints allow the production team to follow only five to six couples. This season, seven couples got engaged, necessitating a tough decision on who to follow.
“When we make that decision as to who to follow, if we have more couples that got engaged, we make a decision as to which couples we think are authentic,” Coelen elaborates. “And when I say authentic, I mean most authentically likely to actually be at the altar and say I do.”
The selection criteria
The selection process is based on the perceived authenticity and commitment of the couples. Coelen explains that the team felt the six couples they chose had a genuine shot at saying “I do.”
“The couple that I think we felt least likely to do that were Leo and Brittany. So, we made a decision not to follow them after the pods ended.”
Interestingly, the stories of Brittany and Leo were deeply intertwined with other cast members, particularly Hannah Jiles and Nick Dorka. Leo was initially torn between Hannah and Brittany, adding layers to the narrative.
“You start to realize, because we did follow Hannah and Nick, Leo was such a big part of Hannah’s story. You can’t really tell Hannah’s story without telling Leo’s story, and you can’t really tell Leo’s story without telling Brittany’s story,” Coelen explains.
The aftermath
Despite not being chosen to continue on the show, Brittany and Leo decided to take their own trip to Mexico. This decision highlights the unpredictability and authenticity of the show’s format.
“All the cast members are informed that they may not be chosen to be followed, so may not go to Mexico for the post-show trip. In this case, Brittany and Leo decided that since they weren’t chosen, they’d do their own trip to Miami,” Coelen shares.
Coelen hints at the possibility of seeing more of Brittany and Leo in the future.
“I think certainly they’ll be at the reunion,” he says. “And maybe someday we actually will follow more [couples] into the real world. I would love that, it’s just complicated and a lot of story to tell.”
What’s next?
“Love Is Blind” continues to captivate audiences with its unique approach to love and relationships. The first six episodes of Season 7 are now streaming on Netflix, with episodes 7-9 set to begin streaming on Oct. 9.
