The Philippines has taken a significant step in its digital economy by imposing a 12% value-added tax (VAT) on overseas digital service providers. This new measure, signed into law by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., targets major platforms such as Netflix, HBO, and Disney.

President Marcos emphasized the importance of this tax in a recent speech, stating, “If you are reaping the rewards of a fruitful digital economy here, it is only right that you contribute also to its growth.” This law aims to create a level playing field between local businesses and international digital platforms.
The scope of the new law is extensive, covering online search engines, media, advertising platforms, digital marketplaces, and cloud services. According to the finance department, this tax is expected to generate 79.5 billion pesos ($1.4 billion) in revenue over the next four years.
