The Simpsons dive into ‘The Yellow Lotus’ in a thrilling new episode
A parody with a twist
This Sunday, The Simpsons embark on a unique adventure in their latest episode, “The Yellow Lotus,” where they encounter unexpected twists at a luxurious resort. This episode is a clever parody of the Emmy-winning HBO series, The White Lotus. The homage begins with a playful take on the show’s eerie opening credits.
A musical parody
In true Simpsons fashion, the show adds its own lyrics to the instrumental theme of The White Lotus: “Hot bodies, and murder/ Rich, sexy people behaving badly/ Makes you feel better about being broke and unknown/ Symbolic statues and endless brunch/ How do they eat like that and still look great naked/ Are they on ozempic?” This humorous twist sets the tone for the episode, blending satire with the familiar charm of Springfield’s favorite family.
Star-studded guest appearances
“The Yellow Lotus” airs at 8 p.m. ET on Fox this Sunday, October 6. The episode features notable guest voices, including Kelsey Grammer reprising his role as Sideshow Bob. Given the murder mystery theme, Bob’s presence is almost a given. Additionally, SNL star Chloe Fineman makes a guest appearance, adding to the episode’s allure. This marks the second episode of Season 36, following last week’s intriguing “series finale” fakeout.
Behind the scenes
The melody for “The Yellow Lotus” song was crafted and performed by Kara Talve, who serves as the principal composer for The Simpsons. Talve’s other notable works include “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” and “Faraway Downs.” The episode itself was penned by Loni Steele Sosthand and directed by Matthew Faughnan, ensuring a seamless blend of humor and suspense.
The original inspiration
The original White Lotus theme, “Aloha,” composed by Cristobal Tapia de Veer, won the Emmy in 2022 for original main title theme music. De Veer also clinched the Emmy for music composition for a limited or anthology series, movie, or special (original dramatic score) in 2022, and again for music composition for a series (original dramatic score) in 2023. The Simpsons parody draws more from Season 2 of The White Lotus, featuring de Veer’s reworked main title theme, now called “Renaissance.” The Season 2 title sequence was crafted by Katrina Crawford and Mark Bashore from the studio Plains of Yonder.
More parodies to come
“The Yellow Lotus” is just one of several parodies lined up for Season 36 of The Simpsons. Later this month, the show teams up with Stoopid Buddy, known for Robot Chicken, to parody Venom in the annual “Treehouse of Horror” special. In this episode, Homer faces off against “Denim.” This marks the 35th “Treehouse of Horror,” and the show promises it will be “the scariest 35th Halloween special ever.”
A season of spookiness
The Halloween fun doesn’t stop there. The producers have announced a “second scary trilogy” for this season, inspired by the works of Ray Bradbury. This trilogy, titled “Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes,” will feature three spine-chilling stories, adding to the season’s eerie excitement.
