The epic conclusion of ‘The Rings of Power’ Season 2
A climactic battle in Eregion
The second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” on Amazon Prime Video culminates in a breathtaking finale, where the massive orc assault on Eregion reaches its devastating peak. The elves, now united, face their most formidable adversary yet: Sauron (Charlie Vickers).
A shocking betrayal and a new dark lord
In a twist that left viewers stunned, the orcs betray their leader Adar (Sam Hazeldine), pledging their allegiance to Sauron, the true dark lord. With Adar’s army now under his command, Sauron emerges as Middle-earth’s deadliest foe. However, the elves are not alone in this fight. The newly crowned King Durin IV (Owain Arthur) and his dwarves stand ready to assist.
The rise of King Durin IV
The episode opens in Khazad-dûm, where King Durin III (Peter Mullan) has been corrupted by his ring of power. Obsessed with mining more mithril, he ignores his son’s pleas, awakening the colossal Balrog. In a dramatic turn, Prince Durin convinces his father to remove the ring, but it’s too late. The Balrog’s fiery whip ensnares the dwarven king, who sacrifices himself to save his son. This act of bravery marks the ascension of Prince Durin IV as the new ruler.
The fall of Celebrimbor
Another significant loss in the episode is Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards), the master blacksmith and creator of the rings. In a tense confrontation with Sauron, Celebrimbor realizes he has been a pawn in Sauron’s game. With his dying breath, he acknowledges Sauron as “the lord of the rings,” a title that resonates with chilling finality.
Galadriel’s perilous encounter
Sauron then turns his attention to Galadriel (Morfydd Clark). Their confrontation is a surreal battle of wits and power, with Sauron shifting forms to resemble Celebrimbor, his past alter-ego Halbrand, and even Galadriel herself. The encounter reaches a climax when Sauron stabs Galadriel with the cursed crown of Morgoth. Though she escapes by plunging into the water, the crown leaves her with a spiritual wound that Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker) must heal.
A new sanctuary for the elves
Despite their loss in the battle of Eregion, the elves find hope in a new sanctuary protected by their rings. With all the elves, including the warrior-archer Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova), united, they prepare to make another stand against Sauron. This final scene leaves the season on a hopeful note, with the elves’ resilience shining through.
The identity of the Stranger revealed
The finale also unveils the long-speculated identity of the Stranger (Daniel Weyman). As many fans predicted, he is indeed Gandalf. In a poignant scene with fellow wizard Tom Bombadil (Rory Kinnear), Gandalf regains his memory and his magical staff, setting the stage for future adventures.
Looking ahead to Season 3
While Prime Video has yet to officially renew “Rings of Power” for a third season, Córdova expressed optimism about its return. Reflecting on his character Arondir’s journey, he shared his hopes for a more prominent role in the upcoming season. “Arondir has proven himself and is ready for a tactical, higher position,” Córdova said. “I would love to see him command, strategize, and be woven into the story with the established characters from the books.”
Final thoughts
The second season of “The Rings of Power” has been a rollercoaster of emotions, with epic battles, heart-wrenching sacrifices, and the promise of new beginnings. As we await news of a third season, the show’s intricate storytelling and rich character development continue to captivate audiences.
