EFD Studios unveils plans for Europe’s largest virtual set

A new era in virtual production

As part of its ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence, EFD Studios, a leading tech rentals company with operations in Mexico, Colombia, the U.S., and Spain, has announced a groundbreaking new endeavor: the opening of the largest virtual production set on the European continent.

A colossal investment: details of the new facility

Spanning an impressive 2,000 sq. meters (21,500 sq. feet), this state-of-the-art facility will be equipped with the latest LED technology and sophisticated computer and processing chains. This ambitious project underscores EFD Studios’ dedication to leading the charge in virtual production. The new set will be strategically located at EFD Studios in Boadilla del Monte, a mere 20-minute drive west of Madrid. Occupying almost half of the company’s 5,000 sq. meter (54,000 sq. feet) headquarters in Spain, the space is currently undergoing extensive renovations to meet the specific requirements of the new setup. The studio aims to begin operations by the second quarter of 2025.

EFD Studios’ bold vision

While LED screens are typically transportable, this new venture will be a “permanent world-class LED volume”, ensuring stability and high-quality production capabilities. This permanent setup will cater not just to local productions but also to large-scale international projects from major studios, many of which are already EFD clients.

A proven track record

Established as the premier tech rental company in Mexico, EFD Studios has a reputation for supplying high-end equipment. For example, the studio provided Alexa 35 cameras with Hawk V-Lite lenses and a lighting system featuring SkyPanels and Asteras for Disney+’s ‘La Maquina,’ starring Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna. Additionally, for ‘Pedro Páramo,’ a Netflix series directed by Rodrigo Prieto, EFD supplied not just mobile lighting and grip equipment but also ARRI’s M-series lights, SkyPanels, power generators, and a Fisher Dolly 11.

Expanding its European footprint

EFD Studios has firmly established its presence in Spain, collaborating closely with its headquarters in Mexico, Colombia, and the U.S. This cross-continental collaboration facilitates strategic actions and purchasing decisions, reinforcing the company’s global influence. Announced during the recent Conecta Fiction event, EFD Studios revealed plans to enhance its presence in Spain, focusing on both equipment rentals and post-production services.

The decision to venture into virtual production aligns with their mission to promote a sustainable industry, blending cutting-edge technology with eco-friendly practices. EFD Studios is not just about technological advancements; it recognizes the importance of nurturing local talent. At the Virtual Production: A Game-Changer panel during the Iberseries & Platino Industria forum, Terán emphasized the company’s commitment to retaining top-tier regional talent in Spain and Mexico. To support this, EFD Studios has introduced two significant initiatives: Circa 24 and the EFD Studios Academy.

Training the next generation

In collaboration with Animal de Luz Films, led by renowned producer Inna Payán, Circa 24 will focus on film training in Mexico, targeting emerging talent. The program will adopt a multi-faceted approach, providing participants with a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience across both creative and technical domains.

Meanwhile, the EFD Studios Academy in Spain will concentrate on the technical side of the craft, offering high-demand, practical skills to both burgeoning and established professionals. By fusing training with ongoing education, the academy aims to meet the ever-growing market demands and prepare trainees for successful careers in the industry.
