It’s what’s inside: From dream to Netflix blockbuster
Debut Feature That Broke the Mold
SPOILER ALERT: This story contains spoilers for “It’s What’s Inside,” now streaming on Netflix.
“It’s What’s Inside,” the mesmerizing debut by writer and director Greg Jardin, brought unexpected twists not only to its plot but also to its journey through the cinematic world. This low-budget, body-swapping mystery set off a fierce bidding war at Sundance, ultimately landing a staggering $17 million deal with Netflix.
The Thrill of Sundance
Jardin describes the experience as surreal. “We made this low-budget movie in a bit of a bubble, just hoping someone would buy it at a festival,” he remarked. The excitement was palpable when the first offer, well over their budget, arrived just 24 hours after premiering. What followed was an intense 36-hour bidding war.
Netflix’s significant investment evidences the film’s unique allure. “I told them, ‘It’s crazy — you spent this much money on this movie,’” Jardin shared, emphasizing his gratitude and astonishment.
From Concept to Screen
The tale of “It’s What’s Inside” didn’t unfold overnight. Eight years ago, Jardin and his long-time collaborator, producer Jason Baum, began discussing the concept. The initial draft was expansive and ambitious, challenging for a first-time feature. Baum praised the script’s excellence but suggested a more feasible approach given Jardin’s debut status. This led Jardin to streamline the narrative.
Crafting the Body-Swapping Mystery
Jardin distilled the idea into a more flexible script. “I proposed the simple setup of eight people at a house party, with a mysterious suitcase containing a sci-fi device,” he explained. Inspired by playing the party game Werewolf (aka Mafia), he added the body-swapping twist. What intrigued him most was, “What happens if a bunch of people swap bodies and then two of them died?”
Despite the more compact setting, Jardin ensured his visual storytelling remained dynamic. He utilized split screens and intentional lighting techniques to keep track of characters’ shifting identities, maintaining clarity amid the chaos of soul-swapping.
Production Challenges and Triumphs
Baum, with experience working with notable directors, was pivotal in overcoming logistical challenges. His deep involvement made sure the crew, location, and production stayed on track, shooting in Oregon proved successful.
In 2021, producer William Rosenfeld, inspired by Jardin’s script, offered additional support. Thanks to Rosenfeld and Baum’s commitment, the film overcame obstacles in editing and post-production. Rosenfeld noted Jardin’s dedication, saying, “Greg wore many hats, which required extra time to realize his vision fully.”
Perfecting the Ending
The final touch was perfecting the film’s tone, especially the ending. The character of bad boyfriend Cyrus, played by James Morosini, receives his just deserts. Initially, a darker conclusion was considered, where Shelby, portrayed by Brittany O’Grady, gained less agency. But during production, the team adjusted this for a more victorious arc. Jardin commented, “The original ending felt more like ‘Black Mirror,’ but the new ending lets Shelby grow more as a character.”
Future Endeavors and Reflections
With “It’s What’s Inside” now available on Netflix, Jardin is already contemplating his next project, described as a “dramatic thriller.” While he’s open to a sequel to “It’s What’s Inside,” no firm plans are in place yet. The enthusiastic reception since Sundance has sparked curiosity about potential follow-ups.
Industry Insights:
Jardin’s experience sheds light on the often misunderstood aspects of film sales and finance. He learned firsthand about the business side of movies, debunking the myth that a successful sale means instant wealth for creators. “People texted, ‘I guess next dinner’s on you!’ but the sales reality is different.”
Ultimately, “It’s What’s Inside” stands as a testament to Jardin’s innovation, resilience, and the collaborative spirit of filmmaking. Its journey from a low-budget project to a major Netflix acquisition highlights the unpredictable and thrilling nature of the film industry.
