Sally Field recounts a painful past to champion reproductive rights
An emotional revelation
Acclaimed actress Sally Field opened up about a deeply personal and traumatic experience in an Instagram video, hoping to shed light on the vital importance of reproductive rights in today’s political climate. Reflecting on a harrowing ordeal from her youth, Field shared her story with a candid vulnerability that has moved many.
In the video, Field, now a two-time Oscar winner, recalls undergoing an illegal abortion at the tender age of 17, years before the landmark Roe v. Wade decision. “I had no choices in my life,” she begins poignantly. “I didn’t have a lot of family support or finances. I graduated high school, but no one ever said, ‘How about college?’ Nothing. I didn’t know what I was gonna be. And then I found out I was pregnant.”
The reality of limited choices
Raised in the 1950s, Field speaks to the societal pressures and the lack of resources available to young women during that era. “I still feel very shamed about it because I was raised in the ’50s, and it’s ingrained in me,” she admits, highlighting the long-lasting impacts that cultural stigmas can have on an individual’s psyche.
When she discovered her pregnancy, access to contraception was limited, and women’s reproductive choices were heavily constrained. Field describes the desperate situation, saying, “It was during a time even worse than now. A time when contraception was not readily available and only if you were married.”
The terrifying journey to Tijuana
Field’s retrospective took a darker turn as she detailed the clandestine trip she took with her mother and a family friend, who was a doctor. The destination: Tijuana, Mexico. “We parked on a really scroungy-looking street. It was scary, and he parked about three blocks away and said, ‘See that building down there?’ He gave me an envelope with cash and I was to walk into that building, give them the cash, and then come right back to him.”
She recounts the painful procedure, performed without anesthetic, and the horror of realizing she was being molested by a technician.
“I had to figure out how to make my arms move to push him away. It was just this absolute pit of shame.”
From trauma to triumph
Even though Field describes the event as “beyond hideous and life-altering,” she also expressed gratitude towards the doctor who risked his career to help her. After enduring such a harrowing experience, Field’s life took a historic turn; she soon landed her iconic role as Gidget.
Reflecting on her journey, Field leverages her platform to discuss the ongoing fight for reproductive rights in light of the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022. “I feel that so many women of my generation went through similar traumatic events and I feel stronger when I think of them,” she wrote. “I believe, like me, they must want to fight for their grandchildren and all the young women of this country.”
A call to action for the future
Field’s story not only sheds light on her personal past but also underscores the urgency of current reproductive rights issues. Women today face similar, if not more complicated, challenges when it comes to accessing safe abortions. “These are the things that women are going through now — when they’re trying to get to another state, they don’t have the money, they don’t have the means, they don’t know where they’re going,” she emphasizes.
Field’s message is clear: the fight isn’t over, and we must actively work to ensure that women’s reproductive freedoms are protected. “We can’t go back. We have to all stand up and fight.”
Translating her experience into a broader advocacy effort, Field encourages others to share their own stories and stand in solidarity for reproductive rights.
