The legend of Nang Nak: A ghostly love story set to captivate Asia
A haunting love story returns
Thailand is renowned for its captivating ghostly dramas, and “The Legend of Nang Nak” is set to thrill audiences across Asia next week. Directed by Taweewat Wantha and scripted by Sorarat Jirabovornwisut, the mastermind duo behind the successful “Death Whisperer 1 and 2,” this 30-part series weaves a gripping tale of a ghostly love that transcends the boundaries between life and death.
Stellar production and wide release
The series is a proud creation of production firm Minds@Work and the Thai terrestrial broadcasting giant BEC World. Internationally, I.E. Entertainment handles the series’ distribution. Starting from October 14, audiences in Thailand can catch the series on Channel 3 and on Netflix. Fans in Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar can also stream it on Netflix, while Vidio and Viu will provide access for viewers in Indonesia.
Plot overview
Set in the early 19th century, the story revolves around Nak, portrayed by Yiwha Preeyakarn, who is promised to Lord Sanpimarn but finds herself falling for Mak, played by Job Thuchapon. The lovers escape to Bang Phra Khanong, Mak’s village, only to face obstacles from Mak’s mother and a jealous acquaintance. Tragedy strikes when Mak is called to war, and Nak dies in childbirth, but her spirit lingers, awaiting Mak’s return. As the villagers try to ward off her ghost, Nak’s wrath and undying love create a supernatural conflict.
An enduring classic with a fresh perspective
The love story of “Nang Nak” is a timeless classic in Thai culture, often compared to Western tales like “Dracula” or “Romeo and Juliet.” According to the producer and managing director of Minds@Work, this version of “Nang Nak” offers a full spectrum of emotions, reflecting Thai traditions of love, drama, comedy, and horror.
“We’ve enriched the story with historical details and new characters, exploring the lives of Nak and Mak before they met,” the producer explained, emphasizing how this adaptation breathes new life into the beloved narrative.
A production powerhouse
Minds@Work is not new to delivering cinematic hits. The company’s managing director has played a pivotal role in bringing acclaimed Thai films such as “Tears of the Black Tiger,” “Bang Rajan,” and “Bangkok Dangerous” to commercial success and international film festivals. Since starting his own company in 2016, he has ventured into various genres, producing shows like the game show “Thai Mung,” the variety talk show “Roo Jing Pa,” and the singing contest “Cloning Singing Contest.” This diverse portfolio has paved the way for their expansion into drama series production.
Previous hits and future projects
One of the director’s more recent successes was last year’s hit movie “Death Whisperer,” whose sequel is set to release in Thai theaters this week. Other notable drama series under his belt include the supernatural romance “Spirits of the Mekong River,” the rom-com “My Sweet Assassin,” the adventure fantasy “World of Himmapan,” and the fantasy-actioner “The Blaze of Naga.”
Exploring the depth of character and culture
“The Legend of Nang Nak” promises not just a haunted love story but also a deep dive into early 19th-century Thai culture. Through its meticulous attention to historical accuracy and cultural resonance, the series aims to offer viewers a rich, immersive experience. By translating a classic tale into an epic series, the showrunners pay homage to Thailand’s rich folkloric traditions while making them accessible to a contemporary audience.
The ghosts, love, and drama portrayed in this series are not just for scares but also serve as a metaphor for societal struggles and the eternal human quest for love and acceptance.
