Al B. Sure! reemerges with a powerful message at liver foundation gala
A return to the spotlight
R&B legend Al B. Sure!, also known as Albert Brown, made a memorable return to the public eye at the American Liver Foundation’s annual fundraising gala in New York. On this special evening, Brown was honored with the Transplant Trailblazer Award for his dedicated work in advancing health equity. This event marked his first major public appearance since making headlines with his explosive statements about the death of his and Sean “Diddy” Combs’ ex-partner, Kim Porter.
The power of resilience and advocacy
With a tone filled with determination, Brown passionately addressed the crowd in midtown Manhattan. “Being a trailblazer isn’t about the fame or fortune,” he declared. “It’s about walking a path uncertain, filled with hope and conviction, knowing that the work that y’all do will make a difference to those who come after us. Health, to me, is the new wealth.”
Brown’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. In 2022, he battled a cross-section of illnesses that put him on a ventilator for 38 days and into a coma for several months. Despite the dire circumstances, Brown emerged stronger, using his experience to advocate for transplant patients worldwide.
Calling attention to Kim Porter’s death
Earlier this year, Brown sparked intense public interest with a four-part Instagram post calling for an investigation into Kim Porter’s death. The medical examiner had deemed her death from lobar pneumonia as due to natural causes. However, Brown referred to it as a “tragic murder” and suggested that it might be connected to an alleged tell-all book Porter was reportedly writing about her time with Combs.
Porter and Brown, who shared three children, had a complex relationship that transitioned into Porter’s on-and-off relationship with Combs until her untimely death in 2018. Brown’s bold claims have thrown a spotlight on this case, particularly as Combs faces his own legal battles, being incarcerated on multiple charges including sex trafficking and racketeering.
A celebration of health equity
During his speech at the gala, Brown emphasized his commitment to breaking barriers in transplantation and advancing health equity for underserved communities. He founded the Health Equity in Transplantation Coalition, which champions the restoration of Medicare coverage for non-invasive blood tests that detect early signs of organ rejection, circumventing the need for biopsies.
Brown’s partnership with civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton has amplified his efforts, and his speech, charged with emotion and assertiveness, was a testament to his dedication. “I decided to make a decision to get up and fight, to advocate for all transplant patients around the world,” he stated.
Looking ahead: a memoir in the works
One of the evening’s highlights was Brown’s announcement of his forthcoming memoir titled Before Coma, After Coma: The Al. B! Sure Story. In this narrative, Brown is expected to delve deeper into his personal experiences, offering an intimate glance at his life before and after his near-death encounter.
Brown also made a light-hearted comment about the ubiquity of press attention following his statements, and even hinted at the presence of Homeland Security at the event, though it remained unclear if it was a joke or a nod to the heightened security.
Reflecting on a mid-90s legend’s journey
Al B. Sure!’s influence on the music industry is undeniable. After his massive success in the late ’80s and early ’90s, he became an icon of the R&B genre. His journey from hit songs like “Night and Day,” to his battles with health, and his advocacy for health equity showcases his resilience and capacity to inspire.
As the American Liver Foundation continues its mission to educate, advocate, support, and research to prevent liver disease, Brown’s contributions and voice add a powerful layer to their cause. The gala not only celebrated his achievements but also highlighted the importance of health advocacy and the need for continuous efforts in this domain.
