Sandy Powell’s iconic costume designs make their U.S. debut at SCAD
A journey through four decades of cinematic fashion
The illustrious career of Sandy Powell, a costume designer whose work has defined many iconic films, is now showcased at the SCAD Museum of Fashion and Film in Atlanta. This retrospective, titled “Sandy Powell’s Dressing the Part: Costume Design for Film,” curated by Rafael Gomes, spans over four decades and highlights the creative genius behind some of Hollywood’s most memorable costumes.
“It’s been a very strange experience,” Powell remarked at the exhibition’s opening. “Each one of those pieces brings me back to where I was in my life at those times. It’s like I’ve seen the last 40 years of my life in one room.”
A diverse array of cinematic masterpieces
Powell’s versatile portfolio includes “Orlando,” “Shakespeare in Love,” and “Far From Heaven,” among many others. The exhibit showcases a vast array of genres, periods, and realities, spotlighting her dynamic contributions to films such as:

Emotions woven into costumes
Paula Wallace, President and Founder of SCAD, emphasized the significance of Powell’s work:
“With 15 Academy Award nominations and three wins, designer Sandy Powell has masterfully costumed films from ‘Shakespeare in Love’ to ‘The Wolf of Wall Street.’ Sandy is no stranger to SCAD; we’ve honored her at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival and welcomed her as a guest on On Creativity. Now, we bring our friendship full circle with this exhibit.”
Notable displays and favorites
Among the exhibit highlights are the fur coat and hat from Carol, worn by Cate Blanchett. Powell expressed her excitement about the exhibition’s potential to inspire future designers:
“I hope that this carefully curated collection will inspire students and aspiring costume designers just as I have been inspired by the creativity of those before me.”
The exhibit also features costumes from Interview with the Vampire, showcasing outfits worn by Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and Kirsten Dunst.
Powell’s personal collection
Powell is one of the few costume designers who has managed to keep a collection of her creations. This tradition began with her first film, Caravaggio, and has continued despite the challenges:
“At the end of the film, no one really knew what to do with the costumes, so I took some of them. As I got into bigger films, I realized that I couldn’t take them because they’re technically the property of the people who pay for the films,” Powell admitted, adding that she gets attached to certain pieces and sometimes asks for permission to retain key items.
Celebrating a career in costume design
Powell’s collection, showcased through March 16, offers a unique glimpse into her storied career. Highlights include:
- Costumes from Gangs of New York (link)
- Elaborate designs from Cinderella
- Iconic looks from The Favourite
Each piece serves as a testament to Powell’s exceptional ability to bring characters to life through her meticulous attention to detail and passion for storytelling through fashion.
