Itzy’s triumphant return with ‘Gold’: Inside their powerful new EP
Lia’s comeback and the group’s journey
“I’m really excited for this comeback because I know that many people, including our Midzy, have been waiting for me and for all five of us to be on stage,” shared Lia, during a heartfelt Zoom interview from Seoul. After a 10-month hiatus to focus on her mental health, 24-year-old Lia makes a triumphant return to the K-pop girl group, Itzy, in their new album, Gold.
In her absence, Itzy, comprising members Yeji, Lia, Ryujin, Chaeryeong, and Yuna, released an album and embarked on a world tour. The group’s bond and chemistry have only grown stronger during this period apart.
The essence of Itzy’s music and their unique identity
Itzy, under Korean entertainment giant JYP Entertainment, has spent five transformative years in the world of K-pop. They’ve carved a niche with their “girl crush” concept, an empowering take that swaps the usual bubblegum pop sound for powerful anthems filled with self-confidence. Their debut track, “Dalla Dalla”, embodies this perfectly. Lia’s declaration, “Don’t measure me by your standards alone / I love being myself, I’m nobody else,” is a testament to their bold message.
A deep dive into ‘Gold’
Gold, Itzy’s latest EP, feels like a nostalgic nod to their early days, yet is fresh and invigorating. The EP features two lead singles: the assertive and dynamic “Gold” and the melodically rich “Imaginary Friend”. Each track showcases Itzy‘s diverse range and evolution as a group.
Additionally, “Gold” includes re-recorded tracks from their last EP, especially “Untouchable,” which now features Lia‘s vocals. “With this new album being completed with all five members’ voices, it’s more unique and special,” Yeji noted. The group is confident that fans will be thrilled to hear Lia in these songs.
A collaboration to remember
Itzy’s new EP also features an exciting collaboration with Stray Kids member Changbin. Describing the experience, Chaeryeong called it “amazing and fun,” while Ryujin added that knowing Changbin made the recording process enjoyable and comfortable. This collaboration highlights the tight-knit community within JYP Entertainment and adds another layer of depth to the album.
Members’ favorite tracks
Within the EP, several tracks stand out as favorites among the members. Ryujin expressed particular excitement for “Five,” a song that has been in the group’s repertoire for two years and promises to resonate deeply with fans. Chaeryeong‘s top pick is “Supernatural,” while Ryujin favors “Bad Girls R Us” for its sound and empowering message.
Reflecting on their journey
As Itzy looks towards their sixth year, reflection has become a crucial part of their journey. “Things don’t always go as planned,” said Yeji. “I have to be careful and think more deeply, and trying my best is the way to not leave any regrets when preparing for the album.”
Echoing this sentiment, Yuna added, “Nothing is assured with life, but we will always trust each other, make good memories, and create albums with meaningful messages.”
Looking ahead
Itzy continues to work towards their next goals, a theme encapsulated in the lyrics of “Five”: “Four a lucky clover / But nothing is better than five.” This mantra speaks to the unity and strength they derive from being together as a five-member group, tackling challenges and embracing triumphs side by side.
