Nicole Maines reclaims her narrative in new memoir
H2: A new perspective on an ongoing journey
Gracing the screen in the hit series Yellowjackets, Nicole Maines has now ventured into the literary world with her new memoir, It Gets Better . . . Except When It Gets Worse: And Other Unsolicited Truths I Wish Someone Had Told Me. This book offers Maines a platform to share her story directly, something she’s been longing to do since her early days in the public eye.
H2: Setting the stage with “Becoming Nicole”
Nicole and her family were previously the subjects of a comprehensive narrative in the 2015 book Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family. While this book chronicled their journey following Maines’ coming out as transgender during her childhood, it left Maines yearning to voice her own experiences more personally and thoroughly.
H3: Owning her story
At 27, Maines emphasizes the significance of her new memoir as an opportunity to express her side of the story.
“This book is the chance for me to sort of tell my side of the story,” she states. “It quickly, for me, became like ‘This is going to be the space where I get to air my grievances and not have to listen to a troll.’”
The memoir is not just an outlet for personal anecdotes but rather a platform for Maines to dive deep into her emotions and experiences, truly embracing what she calls “soapbox opportunities”.
H2: Confronting social media’s flaws
One of Maines’ key reflections revolves around the hostile environment of social media. She acknowledges her struggle to use platforms like Twitter effectively, citing them as hotbeds for racism, misinformation, and backlash.
“There’s so much just backlash, and then as we see, retaliation from industry professionals if you say something that isn’t liked,” she explains, highlighting the difficulty of having “actual honest conversations” online. For Maines, social media doesn’t offer a productive space for discourse or education, which underscores why her memoir is so vital to her storytelling efforts.
H3: The aftermath of “Becoming Nicole”
Maines felt compelled to write her own book in the wake of Becoming Nicole, which many interpreted as a “happily ever after” narrative.
“It felt like Becoming Nicole ended on such a happily ever after note where, ‘Oh, she got a boyfriend.’ ‘She went to college.’ ‘She got surgery,'” she says. However, life presented new challenges and complexities that the public narrative didn’t capture.
“It so tremendously went to shit right after that,” she adds candidly, elaborating on the impossible expectations she had placed on transformative milestones like surgery.
H2: Finding her voice beyond the screen
Despite the imperfect aftermath, Maines’ story took an upward swing with her landmark role in Supergirl as TV’s first transgender superhero. This accomplishment is one of many highlights in her journey, furthering her resolve to tell the complete story in It Gets Better . . . Except When It Gets Worse.
H3: An emotional resonance
Maines hopes her book resonates deeply with the LGBTQ+ community, aiming to validate the experiences of those often marginalized or ignored.
“This isn’t Trans 101. This is, I think, a really great book for anybody who wants to hopefully laugh, learn a couple of things, but I think specifically for queer people, I really want this to be something that makes them feel seen,” she explains.
By sharing her personal triumphs and tribulations, she aims to reach out to those who “suffer in silence”, emphasizing the universality of her experiences.
H3: Beyond advocacy
Maines acknowledges that while she may not offer groundbreaking wisdom, she aspires for her readers, particularly queer and trans individuals, to feel acknowledged in their experiences of “suffering, joy, and anger.” The raw honesty and emotional depth infuse her narrative with a potent resonance, underscoring the immediate relevance and necessity of her memoir.
“Shit’s hard right now. Shit’s scary. And it feels like so much of the time, we’re screaming into a void and begging people to witness us, hear our stories, and see us as human,” Maines notes poignantly. Her book is a testament to the power of personal stories, offering a glimpse into one woman’s journey through societal challenges and personal growth.
H2: Experience the journey
Nicole Maines’ memoir, It Gets Better . . . Except When It Gets Worse, is now available. It promises not just a recount of past events but a heartfelt exploration of her lived reality, inviting readers to witness and understand her story in its truest form.
