SpongeBob voice actors celebrate 25 years at Cannes
A joyful reunion at Mipcom
In Cannes, the iconic voices behind SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star, Tom Kenny and Bill Fagerbakke, celebrated the franchise’s 25th anniversary at Mipcom. Relishing in their enduring roles, the duo reflected on their journey and shared their excitement about new projects, underscoring their enthusiasm: “We’re just as giddy about this job as we were 25 years ago.”
The thrill of international acclaim
The actors have traveled extensively with the show, gaining a global perspective on its impact. Fagerbakke recalled when they first started international promotions after over 15 years on the show. Kenny echoed this sentiment, expressing his delight at seeing SpongeBob represented on billboards amongst more conventional characters, which he finds amusingly surreal.
“I love being the odd man out,” Kenny said, appreciating the character’s unique charm contrasting with typical powerful heroes on display.
A staple in their careers
Before SpongeBob SquarePants, both Kenny and Fagerbakke enjoyed successful careers in performance. Yet, this show holds a special place. Fagerbakke likened their work to that of traveling carnies, perpetually preparing for the next gig. The steady success of SpongeBob has allowed them to plan for the future realistically.
“For some of us, SpongeBob is the only job we’ve ever had,” Kenny added, noting how some colleagues have grown from young 20-somethings to seasoned professionals under the show’s wing. For him, the journey started when he saw the storyboard in 1996, leading to a near 30-year career intertwining his life with the character.
Diverse backgrounds converging in voice acting
Their paths into voice acting came from different beginnings. Fagerbakke shifted from theater and TV to animation, securing roles by tapping into his recognizable voice from previous work. Kenny, conversely, is continually auditioning, driven by his love for voice work.
“I audition non-stop,” Kenny admitted, illustrating his passion for the craft. He humorously shared anecdotes of taking on odd jobs, always eager to keep his voice acting momentum.
Embracing new formats
Throughout its tenure, the SpongeBob franchise has explored various media formats, from movies to video games, and live-action appearances. This year, fans can anticipate special holiday episodes, including a stop-motion feature.
Fagerbakke’s perspective
“As long as it honors the original characters, I’m on board,” Fagerbakke remarked, emphasizing his commitment to staying true to their essence.
Kenny’s adventurous spirit
“I’m just happy to be a passenger on the SpongeBob ride,” Kenny enthused, expressing joy at the evolving ways the show continues to engage audiences. The continual reinvention helps keep the job fun and exciting, making him and Fagerbakke grateful for their roles.
Continued success and future projects
At the recent New York Comic Con, announcements included a two-season renewal for The Patrick Star Show, a preview of the 25th-anniversary special Snow Yellow, and an upcoming stop-motion holiday special, SpongeBob & Sandy’s Country Christmas. These new developments ensure that the magic of SpongeBob remains vibrant and relevant, captivating audiences old and new.
