Behind the makeup: bringing ‘Your Monster’ to life
Crafting cinematic magic
David Anderson is a master of prosthetics and makeup, known for his work on iconic films such as Death Becomes Her, Batman, and The Nutty Professor. His skills transformed actors into unforgettable characters, showcasing his ability to bring any vision to life.
However, when producer Kayla Foster approached Anderson to watch a 15-minute short film titled Your Monster, he had some constructive criticism. Despite Tommy Dewey’s compelling performance as the titular Monster, Anderson felt that the makeup didn’t quite match the performance, describing it as overly theatrical and lacking realism. This frank feedback ignited a creative journey to refine the Monster’s look for its transition into a feature-length film.
Transforming a short into a full-length film
Foster, together with writer-director Caroline Lindy, was determined to elevate the short film into a feature. Their collaboration with Anderson was crucial in achieving this aim. The expanded storyline, starring Melissa Barrera as Laura, revolves around an actress who, after overcoming cancer and a breakup, returns to her childhood home where she discovers a Monster in her closet. This Monster, portrayed by Dewey, becomes a key ally in Laura’s quest to reclaim her life and her Broadway dreams.
Turning Your Monster into a full-fledged movie came with its challenges, particularly budget constraints. Nevertheless, Anderson was captivated by the character of the Monster and committed to refining its design. His goal was to confer a level of polish and believability that would resonate with audiences.
The creative vision
Initially, Lindy’s budget for the short film was minimal, but she had a clear vision for the Monster. “I knew we had a fantastic actor, but we were only halfway there with the initial design. My dream collaboration was with Dave, and Kayla made it possible,” she shared.
Meeting with Anderson, Lindy elaborated on her vision. Anderson’s first concept was reminiscent of a Fabio-like monster with flowing hair. However, as the project progressed, it was evident that a more textured and gritty design was necessary to capture the essence of the character.
Iterations and inspiration
Multiple tests were conducted, including variations with black wigs and different hair textures on Dewey. These attempts, however, did not achieve the desired effect. Anderson, known for his meticulous approach, used Photoshop to experiment with different layers and textures, blending Dewey’s face with various hair designs before landing on the final concept.
A pivotal moment of inspiration came when Anderson stumbled upon an image of a boxer dog with battle scars. “The dog had scars on its nose from fights, looking gritty and tough. It was exactly what our Monster needed – evidence of a hard-fought life,” Anderson explained.
Adding depth and character
Embellishing the Monster’s look, Anderson incorporated dirt and facial details, progressively creating a rugged and compelling character. An unexpected source of creative influence came from the classic film The Wizard of Oz. In Anderson’s workshop, a photo of Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion served as a muse.
Reflecting on this inspiration, Anderson stated, “The design drew features from all these characters. The Monster dresses like the Scarecrow, has the Cowardly Lion’s appearance, and the Tin Man’s demeanor.”
When Lindy saw the final rendition of the Monster, embodying elements from the iconic characters, she exclaimed, “This is exactly what I envisioned. He’s magical, slightly sinister, yet full of heart.”
A unique cinematic experience
Your Monster is now a testament to the blend of expert craftsmanship and creative vision. The film delves into themes of recovery and self-discovery, offering viewers a nuanced and engaging experience. Anderson’s work not only enhances the visual appeal but also deepens the emotional impact of the Monster, making it a memorable character.
