New recognition for ‘The Brink of Dreams’ directors at El Gouna Film Festival
Historic win at Cannes
Earlier this year, Nada Riyadh and Ayman El Amir made history with their remarkable documentary, The Brink of Dreams. It became the first Egyptian film to clinch the prestigious Golden Eye Award for best documentary at the Cannes Film Festival. This groundbreaking achievement brought immense pride to the Egyptian cinema community and set the stage for further accolades.
Celebrating excellence at El Gouna Film Festival
The El Gouna Film Festival recently honored Riyadh and El Amir with the Middle East and North Africa Talent of the Year Award. This recognition celebrates their exceptional contributions to cinema and storytelling, solidifying their status as influential figures in the industry. Their film also graced the Feature Narrative Competition at the festival, capturing the imagination of audiences and critics alike.
A tale of resilience and representation
The Brink of Dreams is a profound coming-of-age documentary that follows the Panorama Barsha Troupe, an all-female theater group from a conservative village in southern Egypt. The film’s narrative explores powerful themes such as underage marriage, domestic violence, and patriarchy. Through their compelling street performances, these women challenge societal norms and bring vital issues to the forefront.
According to Riyadh, receiving the award was an emotional moment. “It’s wonderful to get this award and truly meaningful for us as filmmakers. We deeply respect the creatives who received the award before us and are so very happy to join them,” she stated. The award coincided with the MENA premiere of The Brink of Dreams, adding a layer of significance. Riyadh expressed her excitement: “This is a much-awaited homecoming and the first time an Egyptian audience is going to get to see the film, and we are super excited.”
Breaking new ground in Egyptian cinema
El Amir highlighted the unique nature of their achievement: “This is the first-ever documentary to be released widely and commercially in cinemas in Egypt. It’s an important moment for the industry and a different film from what audiences are used to seeing.” He emphasized the need for representation, particularly of young girls from southern Egypt, showcasing stories that are often overlooked.
Felucca Films: A beacon of independent storytelling
Riyadh and El Amir are the creative forces behind Felucca Films, a Cairo-based production company known for its commitment to independent cinema. Their feature debut, Happily Ever After, delved into their personal romance set against the backdrop of the Egyptian Arab Spring. Premiering at IDFA in 2016, it marked the beginning of a promising journey. Riyadh’s short film The Trap, produced by El Amir, was featured at Cannes’ Critics’ Week in 2019, further establishing their credentials.
The Brink of Dreams also earned a place in the Critics’ Week lineup, reinforcing their impact on the international stage and showcasing compelling narratives from Egyptian society.
Past recipients and the importance of authentic storytelling
Notable past awardees of the Middle East and North Africa Talent of the Year Award include filmmakers Mohamed Kordofani and Ziaid Doueiri. Kordofani’s drama Goodbye Julia was the first Sudanese film featured at Cannes, while Doueiri’s The Insult was Lebanon’s first-ever Oscar nominee. Such accolades underscore the diverse and rich tapestry of cinema in the region.
Receiving the award inspired Riyadh and El Amir to reflect on their mission to tell authentic, untold stories and support national cinema. El Amir shared, “I hope for more films to come, from diverse filmmakers from different areas, regions, and territories. It’s very important to have more support for Egyptian films and to have more freedom. We must be able to express ourselves and reflect upon our society.”
Looking ahead
As the duo continues to break new ground, their journey exemplifies the resilience and creativity of Egyptian filmmakers. By spotlighting stories that challenge societal norms and celebrate underrepresented voices, they pave the way for a more inclusive and dynamic future for Egyptian cinema.
