A magical return with ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’
A sequel years in the making
Over a decade after the beloved “Wizards of Waverly Place” graced our screens, Disney Channel is back with a spellbinding sequel that fans have been eager for. “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place” continues the enchanting story, following Justin Russo (reprised by David Henrie), now a vice principal living a seemingly normal life on Staten Island with his investigative reporter wife Giada (played by Mimi Gianopulos) and their sons Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko).
Though Justin retains his magical abilities, he has chosen to keep his wizarding past a secret from his family. This all changes on his 34th birthday when Billie (played by the phenomenal Janice LeAnn Brown), a rebellious 12-year-old wizard, arrives and turns the Russo household upside down.
New beginnings and familiar faces
The series kicks off with a seemingly ordinary day in the Russo household. Roman and Milo are at each other’s throats over sharing a room, and Justin is preparing to celebrate his birthday. The family’s routine is upended by an unexpected visit from Justin’s sister Alex (Selena Gomez, reprising her role), who desperately seeks Justin’s help. As magic re-enters his life, Justin must navigate the chaos that Billie brings.
Visual magic with updated technology
Seventeen years after the original show’s debut, the advancements in special effects technology have given “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place” a fresh, fantastical edge. The series stays true to its slapstick roots, providing a hearty dose of humor for both new viewers and longtime fans.
In the pilot episode, an accidental freezing spell on Milo sets the stage for comedic chaos as Billie and Roman attempt to hide his frozen form in the garage. The tweens’ antics with a large plush doll add an extra layer of hilarity to the already engaging storyline.
Stellar cast dynamics
While the show’s foundation is rooted in the original, its strength lies in the chemistry and performances of the cast. David Henrie and Selena Gomez, who also serve as executive producers, slip effortlessly back into their iconic roles. Newcomer Mimi Gianopulos infuses the show with her unique quirks.
The younger cast members are equally impressive. Janice LeAnn Brown, Alkaio Thiele, and Max Matenko bring comedic timing and quick wit to their roles. Brown, in particular, shines as the determined and self-assured Billie. In the second episode, “Mortal Vibes Only,” a potion mishap hilariously disassembles Roman and Milo’s bodies, leading to a series of comical encounters as they try to navigate their new forms.
Echoes of the past, tales of the present
While “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place” introduces fresh storylines, it also pays homage to its predecessor. Billie, now a part of the Russo family, forms a dynamic trio with Roman and Milo reminiscent of Justin, Alex, and Max.
In the third episode, “Saved By the Spell,” Billie struggles to fit in at middle school. Out of desperation, she uses magic to win friends, leading to both bonding and consequences. Episode four, “Something Wizard This Way Comes,” delves into the magical traditions of Halloween, featuring thrilling elements like gristletoe and the menacing Pumpkin Belly.
A sequel that stands on its own
Reboots and sequels often face the challenge of living up to their legacy, but “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place” carves out its own niche. The show balances nostalgic elements with new, unique storylines, making it appealing for both new viewers and fans of the original. Central themes of family, responsibility, and the power of magic are explored with a fresh perspective.
Looking ahead
The first two episodes of “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place” are set to premiere on October 29 on Disney Channel, with subsequent episodes airing on Disney+ the following day. Lively, fun, and filled with enchanting moments, this new series promises to captivate audiences and continue the magical legacy it inherits.
