Megan Thee Stallion reveals her raw journey in new documentary
Uncovering the layers of the Houston star
Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words, now streaming on Prime Video, offers an intimate look into the life of the acclaimed Houston rapper. The documentary delves into her meteoric rise to fame while shedding light on the struggles and tragedies that have marked her journey.
A heart-wrenching narrative
In 2019, Megan Thee Stallion, born Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, faced immense personal loss when her mother and grandmother passed away within the same month. This period of her life was followed by another blow when, a year later, she became the subject of a highly publicized criminal investigation involving rapper Tory Lanez, who was accused of shooting her in the feet.
At the documentary’s premiere in Los Angeles, Megan shared the deeply personal reasons behind making the film. She took to the stage at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre and, through tears, revealed her motivations.
“I started to watch a lot of people dehumanize me,” Megan said. “A lot of people were trying to take control of my narrative and tell my story. That’s why I agreed to do the documentary in the first place. Let me just tell my truth and lay it out on the table because y’all don’t respect anything else but raw honesty.”
Beyond the persona: Meeting Megan Pete
For many, Megan Thee Stallion is synonymous with the bold, confident persona she’s crafted in the rap world. However, this documentary, directed by Nneka Onuorah, introduces viewers to Megan Pete, the person behind the public persona.
“My mom told me not to tell my own business, but I think this was the perfect opportunity to go ahead and tell my business,” Megan expressed, paying tribute to her late mother, Holly Thomas, who was also a rapper.
Onuorah highlighted the significance of showcasing Megan Pete. “The deeply curious, vulnerable, humble little Meg,” Onuorah stated. “I think viewers will see that she’s truly just like everybody else, and it’s such a beautiful thing to witness.”
Building trust and breaking barriers
Creating this documentary was a journey in itself, requiring Megan to trust the filmmaking process. Initially resistant, Megan admitted, “I have been giving Nneka hell for the past three years.” The rapper recalled how she would cut cameras during early filming sessions, prompting Onuorah to adapt and capture footage using her cell phone to maintain an intimate and genuine approach.
“I earned her trust because I gave her my time and effort,” Onuorah explained. “She saw that I wasn’t there for Megan Thee Stallion. I was very direct about the necessity of the film but dived into making it personally authentic.”
An unfiltered look at fame
The 112-minute documentary does not shy away from exposing the raw and vulnerable sides of fame. From social media controversies to mental health battles, and the immense pressure that comes with success, the film paints a comprehensive portrait of Megan’s resilience and unyielding spirit.
“I don’t give a f*** what the hate campaign says,” Megan passionately expressed. “I don’t care what they say about me online. You see in real time what I’m doing. I’m doing real things, and you all are real people. I’m just grateful to have you as my supporters.”
