India’s film bazaar elevates six diverse films into its 2024 work-in-progress lab
The magic of new beginnings
India’s prestigious Film Bazaar continues to be a haven for emerging filmmakers, selecting six diverse features for its 2024 Work-in-Progress Lab. Set to take place from November 20-24, the event will introduce the works of five debut directors, nurturing the next generation of South Asian cinema.
A tapestry of cultures and languages
The 2024 selection paints a vibrant picture of linguistic and cultural diversity. Each filmmaker brings a unique perspective. Tribeny Rai‘s Nepali-language Shape of Momos promises an exploration into the nuances of Nepali culture through the lens of a familiar culinary delight. Shakteedhar Bir takes us to Bengal with Gaangshalik (River Bird), a fascinating title set against the backdrop of Bengali traditions.
Telugu filmmaker Mohan Kumar Valasala offers a deep dive into regional storytelling with Yerra Mandaram (The Red Hibiscus). Meanwhile, Ridham Janve merges the lyrical beauty of Gaddi and Nepali in Kaatti Ri Raatti (Hunter’s Moon). Siddharth Badi‘s Marathi film Umal and Vivek Kumar‘s Hindi feature The Good The Bad The Hungry complete this eclectic slate, each story promising a unique cinematic journey.
A hybrid approach to collaboration
Film Bazaar’s mix of online and offline sessions is a hallmark of its innovative approach to post-production. This hybrid model facilitates real-time collaboration between filmmakers and industry veterans, offering precious feedback and valuable insights. The format not only fosters creativity but also bridges gaps, connecting artists with mentors from across the globe.
Film Bazaar has established itself as a fertile ground for independent South Asian cinema, a crucial platform for films in their critical finishing stages. The lab focuses on theatrical features, leveraging the expertise of festival directors, critics, producers, and established editors through one-on-one feedback sessions.
The mark of distinction
Since its inception in 2008, the Work-in-Progress Lab has been instrumental in launching numerous acclaimed films into the international festival circuit. Noteworthy alumni include Putul Nacher Itikatha (2023), Busan award-winner Shivamma (2021), the critically acclaimed Eeb Allay Ooo! (2018), Lipstick Under My Burkha (2015), and Ship of Theseus (2011).
Such a track record underscores the lab’s role as a launchpad for filmmakers destined to make a significant impact on the global stage. These success stories serve as inspiration for new participants, invigorating the cinematic landscape with fresh and compelling narratives.
A hub for the film industry
Considered the primary film industry platform in the region, Film Bazaar functions as a nexus where filmmakers, industry professionals, and audiences converge with a shared passion for South Asian cinema. It is a bustling marketplace not just for films, but for ideas, partnerships, and opportunities.
For its 18th edition, the co-production market unveiled an ambitious slate featuring 29 projects. These range from India to Bangladesh, Nepal, Australia, the U.K., Germany, and Hong Kong. Notably, Shobu Yarlagadda, the producer behind the blockbuster phenomenon “Baahubali,” is among the selection. The market runs concurrently with the International Film Festival of India, from November 20-28 in Goa, creating a synergistic environment for creative exchange.
