A night of surprises at the Give Her FlowHERS Awards Gala
An unexpected start
The 3rd annual Give Her FlowHERS Awards Gala hosted by Femme it Forward kicked off with an emotional surprise. Legendary rapper Snoop Dogg and his wife Shante Broadus were honored with the Black Love Award, leaving the audience at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles in awe.
Snoop Dogg’s heartfelt speech
“This is beautiful because throughout my career I’ve been nominated and won a lot of awards, but there’s nothing like an award that brings you back home to the stage to let people know that this is the reason why you are so successful,” Snoop Dogg shared, standing beside his wife. He continued, “I’ve been nominated for 20 Grammys and never won one, but this right here, this feels better than one. And to the couples out there tonight, it’s always going to be rocky, it’s always going to be hard, but if it’s true love, and it’s meant to be what it’s supposed to be, it’s going to always be good news. That’s real love. Black love.“
Celebrating resilience and talent
Snoop Dogg’s award set the tone for a night celebrating talent and resilience. The event honored several stars, including Jill Scott, Chloe Bailey, Halle Bailey, GloRilla, Doechii, Lady London, and Nija. The evening’s host, Saweetie, was also recognized with the Give Her FlowHERS Award.
Saweetie’s gratitude
Saweetie’s acceptance speech was filled with emotion. “I’d like to thank God because without prayer and faith, I would have lost my mind a long time ago,” she said. “This industry can be crazy, but tonight this room is safe. Thank you all for allowing us to be vulnerable.”
Reflecting the political landscape
The ceremony also touched on broader societal themes. Femme it Forward founder, Heather Lowery, in her opening remarks, connected the evening’s celebrations with recent political events. She invited women who felt overqualified and undervalued to stand, offering a message of hope and recognition.
Recognition of sisterly bonds
During their acceptance speech for the My Sister’s Keeper Award, Chloe and Halle displayed touching sibling affection. Chloe told her younger sister, “Halle, the best award I have ever received happened 24 years ago when you were born.” Halle reciprocated, highlighting their supportive bond.
A visionary’s journey
Doechii, recently becoming the first female rapper to receive a Grammy nomination for best rap album in the 2020s, was honored with the Visionary Award. Presented by her mother, Doechii’s speech was a moving testament to perseverance and faith. “I’m able to accept this award with such a clear mind and a truly, truly renewed spirit,” she said. “To be a visionary, you not only need a vision but an unwavering belief in that vision.”
GloRilla’s words of wisdom
Receiving the Big Femme Energy honor, GloRilla emphasized determination, dedication, and diligence. “Don’t let nobody tell y’all what y’all can’t do because at the end of the day, the day gotta end,” she said, referencing her 2022 hit song “Tomorrow.”
Jill Scott’s heartfelt message
The evening concluded with Jill Scott receiving the Muse Award. “I love what I do so much and the idea that anything I contribute inspires you to feel, laugh, and love more sincerely,” she remarked. “That I could be any part of your joy, your life means the world to me.”
