A rocky start: The pressures of fitting into Hollywood’s mold

“If I auditioned for ‘The Maze Runner’ or ‘Divergent,’ things of that variety that were popping when I was coming up, the feedback was always, ‘Oh, you don’t have the right body,'” Chalamet said in an interview. “I had an agent that called me and said, ‘You got to put on weight,’ basically — not aggressively, but you know.”
Finding his own path: From indie films to personalized cinema
Chalamet’s journey bears similarity to the legendary Bob Dylan’s early years in Minnesota. As he prepares to embody Dylan in the upcoming biopic A Complete Unknown, Chalamet draws parallels between their careers.
“I found my way into these very personalized movies,” Chalamet noted. “For Dylan, it was folk music. He couldn’t keep a rock and roll band because they would all get hired by other kids that had more money, literally, in Minnesota.”
Just as Dylan found success in folk music, Chalamet discovered his niche in small-budget, character-driven films. Rather than conforming to Hollywood’s demands, he sought roles that resonated with him personally.
Breaking through with personalized cinema
Chalamet’s decision to focus on more intimate films paid off. His talent shone through in movies such as Call Me by Your Name, Beautiful Boy, Lady Bird, Little Women, Miss Stevens, and Hot Summer Nights.
“Those were smaller budget, but very — I don’t know how else to put it — personable movies that started in this theater space. This is where I found my rhythm, my confidence, my flow, whatever you want to call it,” Chalamet added.
The leap to blockbuster fame
Chalamet’s talent was undeniable, and soon Hollywood recognized his potential beyond indie films. He went on to secure leading roles in major blockbusters such as Wonka and the Dune franchise. In 2023, Chalamet starred in Wonka and Dune: Part Two, both of which grossed over $200 million domestically within eight months. This achievement broke a box office record held for over 45 years by John Travolta with Saturday Night Fever and Grease.
