Deadpool and Wolverine: A new chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
As the excitement builds for the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, fans of the Merc with a Mouth are eagerly anticipating the chaos and hilarity that Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson (aka Deadpool) and Hugh Jackman’s Logan (aka Wolverine) will bring to the screen.
A journey through Deadpool’s past
Deadpool (2016): The origin story
The 2016 film Deadpool introduced audiences to Wade Wilson, a former Special Forces operative turned mercenary. Diagnosed with terminal cancer, Wade undergoes an experimental procedure led by Francis Freeman, aka Ajax (Ed Skrein), which disfigures him but grants him superhuman healing abilities and a twisted sense of humor. Adopting the mantle of Deadpool, Wade tracks down Freeman and battles him on a decommissioned aircraft carrier in the film’s climax. With the help of the X-Men’s Colossus (Stefan Kapičić) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), Deadpool ultimately defeats Ajax and reunites with his girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin).
Deadpool 2 (2018): A tale of loss and redemption
The 2018 sequel Deadpool 2 begins with tragedy as Vanessa is killed by a crime boss on their anniversary. Struggling with grief, Deadpool decides to join the X-Men to honor her legacy. On their first mission, they encounter Russell (Julian Dennison), a young mutant held captive at a “Mutant Re-Education Center.” Russell’s abuse at the hands of the headmaster leads him to seek revenge, triggering the arrival of the time-traveling mutant Cable (Josh Brolin).
Cable’s mission is to prevent Russell from becoming a serial killer responsible for the deaths of his family. Deadpool, determined to save Russell, forms a new team called X-Force. The film’s climax features an epic showdown at the orphanage, where Deadpool sacrifices himself to save Russell, altering the course of history. Cable then uses his time-travel device to save Wade, creating a new timeline where Vanessa is alive.
What to expect from Deadpool & Wolverine
The merging of worlds
Deadpool & Wolverine is set to continue the irreverent and meta-humor that fans love. The film will delve deeper into the multiverse, officially merging Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This opens up endless possibilities for crossovers and new character introductions, with the most significant being the revival of Jackman’s Wolverine.
Plot details and character dynamics
While specific plot details remain under wraps, the film is expected to explore the dynamic between Deadpool and Wolverine. The trailers suggest that Deadpool arrives in the MCU after being kidnapped by the Time Variance Authority, the multiverse managers last seen in the TV show Loki. Deadpool and Wolverine embark on a mission that will forever change the course of the MCU.
The return of Wolverine
You might be wondering: Didn’t Wolverine die at the end of 2017’s Logan, sacrificing himself to save his clone daughter, Laura (Dafne Keen)? Yes, but the Wolverine featured in Deadpool & Wolverine isn’t quite the same version of the character. Jackman is presumably playing a variant from an alternate universe, leaving Logan’s original ending intact. Interestingly, Keen appears in the final trailer, likely playing an alternate version of Laura.
Behind the scenes
Directed by Shawn Levy, the film stars Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen. Marvel boss Kevin Feige, Reynolds, Levy, and Lauren Shuler Donner produce the film, with a team of executive producers including Louis D’Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey, Simon Kinberg, and Jonathon Komack Martin. The screenplay was penned by the original Deadpool writing trio of Reynolds, Rhett Reese, and Paul Wernick, along with Zeb Wells and Levy.
Deadpool & Wolverine will be officially released in theaters on Friday, July 26, with preview screenings available on July 25. In the meantime, check out the film’s final trailer and get ready for a wild ride through the multiverse.
