Popular on Variety The Carol Burnett Award was created in 2019, with Burnett herself being the first recipient. It is presented to someone who “has made outstanding contributions to television on or off screen,” per the Golden Globes. “The recipient is selected based on their body of work and the lasting impact of their television career achievements on both the industry and audiences.” Aside from Burnett, other recipients have been Norman Lear, Ryan Murphy, and Ellen DeGeneres.

One of his wins came in 1985 forbest performance by an actor in a limited series, anthology series, or motion picture made for television for the film “Something About Amelia.” His other two wins were for best performance by an actor in a TV series — musical or comedy for “Cheers” in both 1990 and 1991. He has also been nominated for his work in shows like “Damages,” “Becker,” and “The Good Place.”
