James Cromwell to star in new film adaptation of ‘The Hairy Ape’
A fresh take on a classic play
James Cromwell, renowned for his roles in “Succession” and “Babe,” is set to produce and star in a new film adaptation of Eugene O’Neill’s play, “The Hairy Ape.” This upcoming project, titled “Brute’s Revenge,” will be written and directed by Janek Ambros of Assembly Line Entertainment. Ambros will also co-produce alongside Emmy winner Cromwell.
A story of revenge and self-discovery
The narrative centers on Yank, an illiterate ocean liner worker who is derogatorily labeled a “filthy animal” by the son of a powerful industrialist. This insult propels Yank on a quest for revenge against the elite family, while he grapples with his place in society. Originally penned in 1922, the play was revived off-Broadway in 2017 at the Park Avenue Armory, featuring Bobby Cannavale.
A cinematic evolution
Ambros and Cromwell’s adaptation promises a more cinematic experience, introducing additional characters that enrich Yank’s journey through a society that marginalizes the working class. Cromwell will portray Harold D.K. Douglass, the industrialist and Yank’s adversary.
“Eugene O’Neill’s play is both tragic and funny and is as timely as ever. I’m excited to work with Jamie once again on a movie that dissects class dynamics, political radicalism, and white knight syndrome,” said Ambros.
A history of collaboration
This isn’t the first collaboration between Ambros and Cromwell. They previously teamed up on “Imminent Threat,” a documentary exploring the War on Terror’s impact on civil liberties, and ”Mondo Hollywoodland,” a psychedelic homage to the 1967 cult classic “Mondo Hollywood.”
A unique perspective
Cinematographer and producer Brandan Haskell, who is also involved in the project, expressed his enthusiasm:
“I’m thrilled to be involved in this project because Janek has offered such a unique, poignant, and quirky perspective on Eugene’s play. With its classic revenge plot, the film will have its audience questioning their morality in a world of unrelenting capitalism.”
Ambros’ recent works
Ambros’ recent production, ”In the Summers,” won the grand jury prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. His latest directorial effort, “Ukrainians In Exile,” is a documentary about the Ukraine refugee crisis, filmed on the Poland-Ukraine border during the early days of the war. The film, released by The Nation, was executive produced by Oscar winner Janusz Kaminski and Liev Schreiber.
A deeper dive into the themes
The themes of class struggle and identity in “Brute’s Revenge” resonate deeply in today’s socio-political climate. The film’s exploration of political radicalism and white knight syndrome offers a timely reflection on contemporary issues. The character of Yank embodies the plight of the working class, making his journey both a personal and universal struggle.
