A new chapter in the Whoniverse: ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea’
The Whoniverse is set to expand once again with an exciting new spinoff series, “The War Between the Land and the Sea”, announced during the “Into the Whoniverse” panel at San Diego Comic-Con. This five-part series promises to delve deeper into the rich lore of the Doctor Who universe, bringing back familiar faces and introducing new ones.
A stellar cast leads the charge
Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw are set to lead the cast, bringing their considerable talents to the forefront. Tovey, known for his roles in “Feud” and “American Horror Story: NYC”, and Mbatha-Raw, who has captivated audiences in “Surface” and “Loki”, will be joined by returning Doctor Who cast members Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Alexander Devrient as Colonel Ibrahim.
The series picks up with the emergence of a fearsome and ancient species from the ocean, triggering an international crisis. As humanity faces this new threat, UNIT steps into action, setting the stage for a dramatic conflict between land and sea.
The creative minds behind the series
“The War Between the Land and the Sea” is the brainchild of Doctor Who showrunner and executive producer Russell T Davies, who co-wrote the series with Pete McTighe. The series marks the return of the Sea Devils, classic Doctor Who villains first introduced in 1972. Davies expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “I’m so lucky to work with such a magnificent cast. This is a huge, muscular, thrilling drama which will shake the Whoniverse to its foundations. When the Doctor’s not in town, the whole of humanity is in trouble.”
Familiar faces in new roles
This isn’t Tovey’s first encounter with the Whoniverse, as he previously appeared in Doctor Who as Alonso Frame over a decade ago. Mbatha-Raw is also no stranger to the TARDIS, having appeared as Martha Jones’ sister Tish in four episodes. However, Davies confirmed that they will be taking on new roles in this spinoff.
Production and direction
Filming for the series, produced by Bad Wolf with BBC Studios for Disney Branded Television and BBC, is set to begin next month. The series will be directed by Dylan Holmes-Williams, known for his work on two Doctor Who season one episodes, “73 Yards” and “Dot and Bubble”. The series will air exclusively on Disney+ where available, and on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK.
A lively panel discussion
During the lively Hall H panel, Doctor Who stars Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson joined showrunner and writer Davies for a discussion moderated by Josh Horowitz. Gatwa, who plays the 15th Doctor, shared his thoughts on the pressure of taking on such an iconic role, saying, “The pressure fuels you because it’s a show that sits in so many people’s hearts and souls. It’s an absolute honor to play a character that’s been going for 60 years.”
Nicola Coughlan, known for her role in Bridgerton, delivered a special video message revealing that she will star in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special as Joy, “a determined woman whose life is changed forever when she meets the Doctor.” Gatwa quipped about Coughlan, “Barbie and Ken, back together again. She brought so much joy to set. She’s an absolute star.”
Looking ahead
Gatwa and Gibson are both set to return next season, welcoming Varada Sethu to the cast as another companion to the Doctor. Gibson also announced that Jonah Hauer-King, known for his role in The Little Mermaid, will join the cast of the new season as part of Ruby’s journey.
The most recent season of Doctor Who ushered in a new era with Gatwa as the 15th Doctor, making him the first openly queer Black actor to take on the role. Gatwa reflected on his casting, saying, “Do you know what? It makes perfect sense to me. I feel like anyone that has a problem with someone who’s not a straight white man playing this character, you’re not really, truly a fan of the show. You’ve not been watching! Because the show is about regeneration, and the Doctor is an alien — why would they only choose to be this sort of person?”
A season to remember
The season has been praised for Gatwa’s performance, with his dynamic portrayal and colorful costumes bringing a refreshing energy to the series. The season has been described as a uniquely mesmerizing watch, thanks in large part to Gatwa’s star turn.
Doctor Who also had a significant presence on the convention’s show floor, inviting fans into the TARDIS for a themed photo-op. On Saturday, Davies will join Star Trek showrunner Alex Kurtzman on an International Friendship Day panel for a creator-to-creator conversation about storytelling across time and space.
