Alien: Romulus – A fresh take on a classic franchise
Breathing new life into a legendary series
Fede Álvarez, the director of the upcoming Alien: Romulus, has a clear vision for the film. While he pays homage to the iconic elements of the original movies, Álvarez is determined to modernize the series for today’s audience. “We kept a lot of the perfect elements about those original movies untouched because we didn’t need to improve them, but then we had a lot of new stuff. That’s what makes it modern and new,” he shared. This balance of old and new aims to ensure that Alien: Romulus stands out while still fitting seamlessly into the beloved franchise.
A youthful twist on horror
One of the most significant changes Álvarez brings to the table is the introduction of a much younger cast. This decision was driven by his desire to create a more relatable and intense experience for the audience. “For me, it was a way to imagine what it would be like for a bunch of young people to grow up in one of these sci-fi colonies at the end of the world and have to face this creature. They’re closer to the audience in a way. They don’t know anything about the world they’re getting into,” he explained.
Álvarez also highlighted the emotional impact of having a younger cast in a horror film. “As a rule of thumb, in horror, the younger the people, the tougher it is to watch them die. Let’s agree on that. An 80-year-old man dies on screen; you lived a good life. If a 12-year-old kid dies in a movie, heartbreak.” This approach aims to heighten the tension and emotional stakes for viewers.
Ridley Scott’s seal of approval
Álvarez was thrilled when Ridley Scott, the legendary director of the original Alien film, praised his work on Alien: Romulus. Scott’s reaction was nothing short of enthusiastic, calling the film “fucking great.” Álvarez expressed his gratitude, saying, “I couldn’t be more grateful that he let us do it.”
Celebrating the legacy at Comic-Con
The cast and crew of Alien: Romulus, including Álvarez, Cailee Spaeny, and Isabela Merced, gathered at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con to discuss their experiences working on the film and how they honored the series’ legacy. Spaeny and Merced, in particular, reflected on the importance of female representation in the franchise, which has been a hallmark since Sigourney Weaver’s iconic portrayal of Ripley.
Spaeny expressed her appreciation for Weaver’s groundbreaking performance, which paved the way for women in action and horror films. “I think what Sigourney did was she really properly paved the way and made a conscious decision to—whatever it meant to be a woman in a horror film or a sci-fi film beforehand—I think she intentionally went the other direction,” Spaeny said. “Stepping into that role, I wouldn’t say it was easy; there’s a lot of pressure going on, but I felt comfortable in that place.”
Merced also praised the writing of her co-star Aileen Wu’s character, Navarro, for its authenticity and intelligence. “Navarro makes really smart decisions in the movie. It’s more believable because Kaylee herself is a very intelligent individual,” Merced noted. “I think that’s what’s really cool about the movie, too: the odds are against them, but their intelligence usually allows them to persevere and overcome the other creature.”

Alien: Romulus promises to be a thrilling addition to the franchise, blending the classic elements that fans love with fresh, modern twists.
