From the Navy to MCA: The early years
Kanter’s journey began in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Post-war, he started his career at MCA, under the mentorship of Lew Wasserman. At just 22, he was tasked with picking up Marlon Brando from the train station, a meeting that blossomed into a lifelong friendship and professional relationship.
Representing the stars
Jay Kanter’s client list reads like a who’s who of Hollywood royalty. From Warren Beatty to Gene Kelly and even Ronald Reagan, Kanter’s influence was far-reaching. His ability to nurture and guide talent was unparalleled, making him a trusted confidant for many stars.
A new chapter in London
When MCA acquired Universal, Kanter relocated to London to oversee the studio’s European production. This move marked a significant chapter in his career, allowing him to expand his influence across the Atlantic.
Founding a production company
After Universal’s European operations ceased, Kanter co-founded a production company with Elliott Kastner and Alan Ladd, Jr. This venture led to collaborations on some of cinema’s most memorable films, including Chariots of Fire, Star Wars, Alien, Blade Runner, Norma Rae, and Thelma and Louise.
Collaborations with Mel Brooks
Kanter’s long-standing collaboration with Mel Brooks resulted in a series of comedic masterpieces. This gathering, held every Friday at Porta Via in Beverly Hills, was a testament to their enduring friendship and shared love for cinema.
A tradition of camaraderie
As described in a 2007 article, “Every Friday, a group assembles there for lunch. They may not be the hippest or youngest players in town, but they’re among the sagest and most accomplished, not to mention funniest. They have met once a week through decades’ worth of filmmaking, often with each other, and a mutual love of movies.”
